Carnival Launches $300 Million Fire and Emergency Power Upgrade

By Theresa Norton Masek

After a series of incidents that led some to question whether Carnival Cruise Lines was short-changing its maintenance programs, the line launched a $300 million program to upgrade emergency power capabilities and fire safety technology on all 24 ships.

The work will improve the level of “operating redundancies” to expand the availability of hotel services in case a ship loses its main power, as happened on the Carnival Triumph in February and Carnival Splendor in November 2010. In both instances, the ships lost power and floated for several days, with food and other supplies airlifted in, until they were towed to shore.

Royal Caribbean Unveils New “Firsts” for Quantum of the Seas

By James Shillinglaw

Royal Caribbean International on April 16 introduced major features for its new Quantum of the Seas, the first of a new class of two ships that the line hopes will revolutionize the cruise experience. With Broadway musical actress Kristin Chenoweth, Quantum of the Seas’ godmother, acting as master of ceremonies, and an innovative video showcasing the major new features of the new ship, Royal Caribbean held a reception and press conference for its top travel agents, past guests and members of the media at the IAC Building on the Manhattan’s Chelsea.

For more about the Quantum of the Seas, see the video above.

Carnival Corp. to Reimburse U.S. for Coast Guard, Navy Assistance

By Theresa Norton Masek

Carnival Corp. said is paying back the federal government for monies spent assisting in the Carnival Triumph and Carnival Splendor incidents. “It should be clearly noted that at no point in time has Carnival stated it would refuse to reimburse federal agencies if they sought remuneration,” the company statement said. “Although no agencies have requested remuneration, the company has made the decision to voluntarily provide reimbursement to the federal government.”

Holland America Develops First Multilingual Shore Excursions

Holland America Line is reaching out to international guests by offering multilingual shore excursions in Europe in Spanish, Dutch and German. “These tours are not just translations of our English-language tours. They were developed while thinking about the preferences of our international guests,” said Richard Meadows, executive vice president of marketing, sales and guest programs for Holland America.

Disney Magic renovation aims for 'something for everybody'

The 15-year-old Disney Magic will get new water features and more exciting slides in a September refurbishment that will be the biggest in the ship's history. (Click here or on the photos for a slideshow of renderings of the new Magic.)

The tone is set by the AquaDunk, a thrill slide in which riders step into a chamber, a door closes, the bottom falls out, and a plunge of 40 feet ensues before riders loop out over the ocean in an enclosed tube.

Also new will be "Twist N' Spout," which Disney executives describe as a family slide.
