Neighbors Walk for WFCM

Enjoying the wonderful pre-fall weather, walkers wearing sponsor Fannie Mae's "Help the Homeless" t-shirts gathered at Southview Community Church in Herndon on Saturday, Sept. 21. A total of $1,820 was raised for WFCM through 64 registered adults and children, who learned about WFCM's homelessness prevention efforts.

WFCM Community Outreach Manager Jennie Bush expressed thanks to church volunteers Kelly Friedlander, Mark Hall, Michael Hollinger and others whose efforts pulled together this event. "It was a fantastic day for a walk in the scenic neighborhood.  I loved the 'community feel' of gathering for fellowship and breakfast after,"

Jennie said. The

church offered fresh cooked eggs, ham, bacon, fruits, sweet breads, and drinks as walkers mingled, awaited door prize drawings, and listened to uplifting music. WFCM appreciates our host church and the participation of every walker.

Jennie Bush (in blue) used signs to inform walkers.

After exercise, Southview's breakfast tasted great!

That's a Lot of Backpacks!

Throughout the summer WFCM put out the call for backpack donations to pass along to low-income children in 23 western Fairfax schools. Due to community generosity and a wonderful collaboration from 21 area churches, three business groups, and individual donors, a total of 1,995 mid- and large-size backpacks were collected--a WFCM record! Through a partnership with Kids R First, school supplies went out to each child as well. These donations assisted many families who struggle just to meet basic daily needs.

Rebecca Watrud, Chantilly High School counselor, said, "Thank you again for all the backpacks. As always, the students are overwhelmed to see so many to choose from, relieved that an expense has been taken off a parent's shoulder, and excited to see what we have packed inside (supplies from Kids R First). Without exception, every student makes a point of thanking us. Thanks for all WFCM does to help our community!"

Pam Fruit of Centreville Baptist Church displays just a portion of the backpacks gathered this summer: 151 delivered to London Towne Elementary School.

Meet Our Featured Artists!

JC REIGNS is a Christian praise group that has been together more than 12 years. Made up of over 20 musicians, they come from many denominations and backgrounds to serve the Lord. Currently awaiting the October release of their fifth CD, "Faith in Pink," the band donates 100 percent of proceeds to Christian charities, to use for their work with those with less. Western Fairfax Christian Ministries, Fresh Water World Wide, Helping Children World Wide, and Camp High Roads have all been recipients of donations resulting from praise concerts and CD sales. The group states, "We have been blessed by God's gifts, and even more so by the fact we are able to use them to help the Kingdom."

Come out to the dinner October 18 to hear JC REIGNS, several clients' experiences, and keynote speaker Star Parker, syndicated columnist and founder of Coalition on Urban Renewal and Education.
