Do More 24

Mark your calendars for Do More 24 - on June 6, 2013.  Do More 24 is a one-day giving event, a local movement that is leveraging the power of the crowd to support our region's most effective non-profits through focused, online donations.  WFCM is participating in this fundraising campaign and we count on YOU to consider a one-time gift on June 6. By donating any amount, large or small, you are supporting our services to needy clients, and helping to propel WFCM toward winning additional awards.

WFCM will soon set up a giving page so be watching for further details on how to support us! Do More 24 is powered by United Way of the National Capital Area and is supported by committed community and corporate sponsors. Click HERE for further information on this innovative opportunity.  We appreciate your partnership!
WFCM Gears up for Annual School Backpack Collection

It seems early to think about starting back to school, but WFCM is collecting backpacks for students attending 23 elementary, middle and high schools.  These backpacks are given to students whose parents can't afford all the school supplies it takes to send a child to school, let alone backpacks.  Often, these families must decide between putting food on the table and gasoline in the car.

WFCM has partnered with Collect for Kids, Fairfax County Public Schools, and Kids R First to help these students.  Kids R First provides the school supplies needed at each grade level, and WFCM provides the new backpacks.

Help is needed more than ever before and we are counting on the community and churches support to provide for these students in need.  The backpacks are given at no cost to students receiving free or reduced-cost lunches.  This year, the local elementary schools have asked for a total of 962 backpacks; the middle schools need 188; and the high schools need nearly 700.  The total number of backpacks needed for this school year is: 1,853 backpacks - and the need is greatest for larger sizes with multiple compartments.  (Please note that we cannot accept school supplies.)

Elementary schools have requested midsize backpacks for grades K-3 (Please no small sizes!), and standard 17 inch backpacks for grades 4,5 and 6. Middle school students the 17 inch or larger backpacks, with two or more compartments, and high school students need the larger 18 inch backpacks, also with compartments.  Backpacks should be new and without wheels.  Our website will soon have information on buying guidelines, as well as links and/or suggestions of where these backpacks can be purchased.

Please help WFCM meet the huge demand this year for backpacks!  WFCM is collecting the backpacks through August 16, 2013.  All backpack donations are tax-deductible, and WFCM will give a receipt to contributors to use for tax purposes.  Backpack donations can be dropped of at WFCM Thrift Store Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:00 a,m. - 4:00 p.m., please mention that the backpack(s) are for the FCPS School Backpack Collection.  The Thrift Store is located at 13939 Metrotech Drive in Chantilly, near the Lotte Market and Goodyear.

Thank you so much for your support!

CBC Operation Serve

WFCM has a fresh new look thanks to The Centreville Baptist Church Operation Serve Team who dedicated their Saturday the 15th to painting our entire lobby, food pantry and offices as well as providing much needed shade with window treatments! We want to thank all who worked so hard in this effort that has truly blessed our clients, volunteers and staff with pleasant and comfortable surroundings!  Thank you!

Client Testimonials

Helen says of WFCM, "This place is like my right arm in my life.  It motivates me to go on." After working for 23 years as supervisor seamstress, Helen lost her job when the company closed.  She became depressed about situation since she was too young to retire. While Helen was looking for work, WFCM provided emergency utility and mortage assistance so she could keep her home.  Now Helen is working again as a seamstress, but makes less than half the income she made previously.  Cheerfully, Helen affirms, "People are amazed that I am able to support myself and my daughter in college at Virginia Tech."  As she considers her blessings, she is thankful for her health, her ability to work, and the food assistance from the WFCM Pantry - all which allow her to care for her family.
