National Volunteer Appreciation Week

April 21-27, 2013

Director's Corner

As I write this, we are celebrating Holy Week, and I am sporadically watching the movie "The Passion of the Christ" as a reminder of our Lord's resurrection. What reason we have to celebrate! Aside from the more obvious meaning of resurrection as it reflects Christ rising from the dead is a second meaning of the word. According to Webster, resurrection means "resurgence or revival." This definition is so perfect to describe what is happening at WFCM during this season of the ministry.

As most of you know, we just completed a move from our former facilities and while they were just around the corner from our new facilities, the process has changed us all. Not only did the move affect our clients and store customers, but it helped humbled ourselves, take stock of what we have (and don't have) and lean on God more. Because our rent and utilities increased dramatically, we have displaced a few staff, had to stretch and recycle supplies and have had the opportunity to train many new and passionate volunteers. We have increased our prayer times and  ministry partnerships, and have had open discussions about unity and about how best to serve our clients and those in need in our community. We trust that we will have the provision we need to cover the cost of our needs, but we kindly request your help in the following areas:
  • Increase in rent of $4,600 per month. Will you prayerfully consider a monthly gift to help us cover this at our two facilities?
  • Obsolete computers/operating systems and no working client database. Cost to replace and update these is approximately $5,600. Will you prayerfully consider a gift to help cover this cost?
  • Moving our Thrift Store has caused us to lose many customers and thus has affected monthly revenue needed to offset costs. Marketing efforts such as signage and ads are required, but these efforts require funding that are difficult to support. A gift of $500 or more would help us to increase our marketing efforts and spread the news of our new location.
  • Additional in-kind goods, for both the Thrift Store and the Food Pantry. We rely on donations from the community to fill our pantry shelves and to provide new and used inventory that we can sell at our Thrift Store. Please see our website or call our main office or Thrift Store for more information on how you can do that.

We are excited about these new opportunities, new partnerships and this new revival we are are experiencing, while still maintaining our original mission. As you reflect on the greatest gift of all time the gift of the resurrection and eternal life, I ask that you reflect on ways you may support WFCM.

In Christ,

National Volunteer Appreciation Week

Please join us as we celebrate our volunteers National Volunteer Appreciation Week April 21-27 at both the WFCM Client Services and Food Pantry Facility and the WFCM Thrift Store. We love all our volunteers, for with their quality service and support, we are able to help our neighbors in need.

Client Testimony

Alice, a single mother of 3 approached WFCM from one of our supporting churches. The church had been supporting this family for 3 years while she worked on becoming stable. Alice came to this country through an arranged marriage where she gave birth to 2 children. Her husband divorced her and she remarried and gave birth to a third child. She converted to Christianity. The church helped relocate her to the Herndon area so she would have access to public transportation and be closer to the congregation. Alice is now looking for work. She speaks fluent French and English. A few of the church volunteers are helping her learn to read and write in English and are teaching her computer skills.

As her financial situation was not improving, a meeting was set with Alice, her church sponsor, the Fairfax County Faith-Based Liaison, a case manager from Shelter House and WFCM. Alice is on her way to becoming self-sufficient and is blessed to have the support and encouragement of these organizations.
2013 Bread & Water Campaign

Partner with Us to Help Our Neighbors in Need NOW through MAY!!

You can be a great source of hope for families who are facing financial hardships, but are working hard to make 2013 a better year. Your generosity provides our clients with help and the hope to perservere.

This financial campaign is vital to WFCM to help our neighbors in need achieve financial stability. We cannot administer our programs without the continued encouragement and support of our community and appreciate the gifts that you contribute to this campaign.

How the Bread and Water Campaign Works:
  • Distribute water bottles to congregation members and employees and ask them to fill the bottles with change, dollars and checks (please make checks payable to WFCM).
  • Take change to a coin counting facility and obtain a check for the donation.
  • Contact WFCM to pick up donations by campaign end date.
If you are interested in participating in the 2013 Bread and Water Campaign or have general questions or comments, please contact Jennie Bush today.
Prayers
  • We pray for clients' children, that they will be safe on the streets and diligent in their studies.
  • We continue to pray for all who are suffering and have physical, emotional and/or financial concerns.
  • We pray for the continued health and strength of our clients, employees, Board of Directors, ministry partners and volunteers, as well as their walk with the Lord.
