Happy Thanksgiving!

I am so grateful this month and this year for so many blessings. Just as we were celebrating our 25th Anniversary in late fall, we were approached by our landlord and given notice that we would have to move by year's end. As shocking as that news was, I knew without a doubt that God has a plan, that God is always sovereign and that things will be okay. After all, He has provided for WFCM and our clients in so many ways over the past 25 years. Though we have had 5 "homes," we have always been able to provide food, clothing and financial assistance. While we have not found a new property to lease, we are still able to provide for our clients and we are more reliant on God than ever. Please join us in praying for a new property as we approach the busy Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and the end of another beautiful year.

This month, we will hold our annual Boy Scout "Scouting For Food" Food Drive on November 10. As always, we need hundreds of helpers to sort and stock approximately 50,000 pounds of food that will benefit our clients for the winter months. Please contact Annette Bosley if you can help out! Further, we will need some able-bodied men, women and young adults to assist in our multi-day move in mid to late December (date TBD). If you can help, please email Annette or call her at (703) 988-9656, x.110 and let her know.

One of our praises is that we had a fruitful Annual Fellowship Dinner (fundraiser) on October 12th, and we raised over $70,000 in gifts and pledges. While that fell a bit short of our goal for this year, we are still grateful for the 260 people who attended the dinner and shared an evening of great food, excellent song and moving testimonies. If you were unable to attend, but would like to donate to WFCM, you can do so by sending your gift to PO Box 220802, Chantilly, VA, or donate online on our secure website.

We remain so grateful to you, our supporters, for your continued prayers, volunteering and in-kind and financial support. We hope you will come alongside us as we move to our new home, and we will keep you informed of where that is.

Meanwhile, we thank our almighty God for meeting all of our needs.

God bless you,
melissa

WFCM Help the Homeless Walk

Our Help the Homeless Walk, Zumba Class and Family Fun Day took place Saturday, 9/29 at the nZone (owned by New Life Christian Church) on Lee Road in Chantilly. The event raised funds to support WFCM's efforts to end homelessness, hunger and poverty in the communities of western Fairfax County. During the two-hour event, a short outdoor walk was offered while a Zumba exercise class was offered indoors. Children and others who were in the building for soccer practices enjoyed games, a moon bounce, face painting, snow cones and popcorn sponsored by the nZone, Ox Hill Baptist Church youth group and Chick-fil-A in Chantilly. Packaged goods and cans were taken on site to assist clients at the WFCM Food Pantry.

"As we were walking, we stopped to read statistics and facts on homelessness and hunger in our community," said Jennie Bush, WFCM Community Outreach Manager. "It was sobering to realize that there are 1,500 homeless in Fairfax County, one of the wealthiest counties in Virginia. Many of the poor and hungry come to WFCM for help financially and for food. WFCM gave away 32,000 bags of food last year, and serves 350 families each year."

WFCM is thankful for all the excellent volunteer support we received to make this event possible. We raised $850 for WFCM that day. The Fannie Mae walk contributes to WFCM's eligibility for additional funds from the Fannie Mae Foundation (sponsors of the DC area Help the Homeless Program).

Testimony: Martha

Martha is a mother with five children and has been on her own for about six years now after separating (on and off) from her husband. She collects scrap metal and recycling to allow her a more flexible schedule to care for her children. She has been receiving minimal child support as well as food stamps to make ends meet.

Martha has worked diligently to keep her children with her. This past summer, when she was renting a room and went into foreclosure, she was forced to seek a new place. In the meantime, the children stayed with her ex-husband while she sought a new rental. Unbeknownst to her, he left for New Jersey, taking the three youngest children while leaving the older two with his sister. The oldest, in distress, was able to reach Martha. She desperately tried calling him, but he would not return her calls. Martha feared that he had left without the intention of returning the children.

School started in September. She reached out to WFCM for assistance and spoke to an employee about her concerns. There was a genuine opportunity to share the gospel and Martha received Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior. The following week, she participated in the Bible study and prayer group offered by WFCM. To our surprise, the following Wednesday, she returned with joy, as her ex-husband had returned her children. She praised God for His faithfulness and was very grateful. Her life has improved greatly. Her children are all doing well in school and she is now in the process of receiving housing and learning English.

WFCM 2012 Holiday Assistance Program

The fall and winter holidays are particularly difficult times for our clients. Each year during the month of October, WFCM receives requests for additional holiday assistance for both the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, and in turn we reach out to our community, requesting sponsors for these families in need, asking for donations of gift cards to local grocery stores and food.

Thank you to all who supported the 2011 Holiday Assistance Program. With your generous help 547 families received assistance for Thanksgiving and 689 families received assistance for Christmas!

Interested in sponsoring a family for the holidays? Please download these helpful guidelines for more information.
