ĦTeam NaturalezaĦ Joins EFTA as Affiliate

Bird Day Team Naturaleza
Environment for the Americas has its first affiliate, a group of enthusiastic bird conservationists in Leavenworth, Washington who have been partners since 2009. When EFTA began its work to improve participation by Latino audiences in International Migratory Bird Day, partners with the Leavenworth Bird Festival (an IMBD event) embraced the opportunity to involve the growing Latino community. Two years later, ĦTeam Naturaleza! is introducing Latino youth and adults to nature and conservation. Organizers have hired Norma Gallegos to serve as the liaison to Latino communities and have already received several grants to help support programs.

The work of ĦTeam Naturaleza! is a natural complement to EFTA's work engaging diverse audiences and promoting bird conservation. As an affiliate, the group receives administrative support and opportunities to collaborate on projects. Already, we have received a grant from the Icicle Fund to develop bilingual education materials.

America's Great Outdoors Update

Hugo Chavez has been selected as one of two interns who will be studying shorebirds in Monterey, California. Hugo has volunteered for diverse organizations, such as the United Farm Workers of America and Fort Ord National Monument. He is passionate about the outdoors and about encouraging young Latinos to learn about science. Special thanks to Rick Hanks of California Coastal Monument (BLM) and Dave Feliz of Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve for their support of Hugo and this project.

Learn About Your Community
How much do you know about the Latino communities near your site? EFTA's Diversity Toolkit provides resources and ideas for improving engagement with diverse audiences. After our work at 6 sites across the U.S., we found that knowledge of the demographics is helpful.

What groups/ethnicities/races live in your community? What are the age ranges? These questions may be answered by accessing U.S. Census Data and will help you direct your education and outreach efforts.
