Burnishing Barracks Row
Improving the Row - New Grant Funds Put to Work
The 700 block of 8th Street,SE, continues its arc of renewal as several buildings begin to emerge from months-long renovations driven by owner-matched Department of Housing and Community Development grant monies. Take a look at these before and after shots (above).
For starters, 739 8th Street, SE, was completely repainted including the addition of stylish, mustard colored trim on the doors. The commercial red awning was removed and replaced with a fashionable navy model emblazoned with the street address. First floor business, A-List Nails now has their name over the door while second floor business, Ex Nihilo, which shares the address, is identified with a street level plaque.
In the next few months a larger than usual number of renovations will be completed. Cumulatively these projects add a new level of visual polish as Barracks Row evolves to reclaim its historic role as the Federal City's original commercial corridor.

Opening Soon on Barracks Row: DCanter and Ambar
Kraze Burger and Rose's Luxury Begin Construction Soon
Fine wines and wine tastings will be featured at DCanter, the new retail wine establishment replacing costume shop, Backstage, at 545 8th Street, SE. Because no kitchen build-out is necessary, we believe DCanter will be first to open among the group of four new businesses to sign recent leases.
Next in rotation, with construction already well underway at 531 8th Street, SE, (formerly home to Jordan's 8) is Ambar. Owned by Ivan Iricanin, also proprietor of Masa 14 on 14th Street near Logan Circle, Ambar will feature Serbian inspired cuisine and should open early 2013.
With its new space at 415 8th Street, SE, essentially complete except for kitchen build out, Kraze Burger should be in business by spring 2013. Kraze Burger features table service for those dining in and does not serve alcohol, making it possible for a rapid and uncomplicated opening. Barracks Row is the second location for owners of the Bethesda burger shop, who own the American franchise for Kraze Burger. Kraze Burger is a chain which operates 100 restaurants in Asia, mostly in Korea.
At 717 8th Street, the owners of Rose's Luxury bring to 8th Street a completely new concept restaurant.Tucked between Homebody and Capitol Hill Bikes, 717 was formerly one of 8th Street's invisible buildings - not decrepit enough to draw attention but during the recession years, an empty hulk. This was a building searching for a soul mate.
Enter Chef Aaron Silverman. Formerly of 2941 in Falls Church, VA, Momufuku and Insieme in NYC, and McCradys in Charleston, SC, Chef Silverman is ready to fill this old building with his new concept eatery. Chef Silverman describes the vibe as exclusively un-exclusive. Rose's Luxury is named after grandmother Rose and will feature $46.00 per person dinners. For the fixed price menu, diners will order from four lists (one vegetable, one starch, etc) with one meat dish all to be shared family style... dessert is separate. Or you have the option to sit at the bar and order a la carte. Dress in jeans; bring your kids. Will feature an interior dining courtyard. Opens summer 2013.
