Opening on Barracks Row
Yes! Organic Now Open - Chipotle Training Employees

Yes Organic Market OPENS Take a walk down Barracks Row this week, in the 400 block you'll sense a new mood. On the east side, at 410 8th Street, SE, Yes! Organic Market quietly opened Friday and is now being discovered by happy customers.  The Yes! Organic Market nearby at 660 Pennsylvania Avenue SE will close shortly as all operations move to Barracks Row.

Chipotle to Open Aug 28? The sign up at Chipotle, 413 8th Street, SE, tells an intriguing story: COMING SOON - We Are  Training This Week -  Come Back and See Us TUESDAY, AUGUST 28!  If that means Chipotle needs customers to practice on, we'll be volunteering! If that means they are actually opening for business tomorrow, we'll be dropping by, too.

Two more businesses are opening soon on Barracks Row: Nooshi Sushi will open in late September at 524 8th Street, SE, 2nd Floor and, on street level, Tash, a new concept kebab restaurant will open at the same time.

A hardhat tour of Tash last week revealed brilliantly colored Turkish tiles lining the walls, a generous bar area flooded with natural light and a level of sophistication and detail reminiscent of high concept, first-of-a-kind marketing tests. We are betting that with Tash, Barracks Row will again be the site of new-restaurant-creation, reminiscent of Ted's Bulletin, hatched on Barracks Row and now opening on 14th Street Corridor and beyond.

One of the defining acts of the 1500+ Main Street programs throughout the country is our ongoing facade improvements which bring grant monies and building owners together. The result in successful Main Streets like Barracks Row's is the dynamic sense visitors take away that the corridor is improving and good things are happening.

This leads to more and more business owners taking a look not just at the newly improved buildings, but at all available Barracks Row properties. Eventually some of those lookers move their businesses to our street, continuing the upward spiral. At right, this morning crews set up for the renovations to 725 8th Street, SE,  part of the 2012 Barracks Row Main Street facade improvement program. Nearly 70 facade improvement projects have been produced by the Barracks Row program over the past 12 years.

One Month to Barracks Row Fall Festival

Barracks Row Fall Festival on Capitol Hill is scheduled for Saturday, September 22, 2012. Officially open at 11:00 a.m. early birds can drop by from 9:00 a.m. on to observe the Military Chef's Cook Off. This black box style contest is held in tents pitched on 8th Street, SE. Every year it pits chef teams from throughout the US military against each other to determine the Top Chef in our armed services.

This year DC State Fair is also joining the Barracks Row Fall Festival sponsoring contests of a different sort - Funkiest Looking Vegetable Grown in DC, Best Bike Accessory, Best Pie. The winners receive honor, trophies, bragging rights and small cash prizes.

As word of our successful historic corridor spreads regional specialists like Essence de Provence (hand made lavender products) and Vault (designer jeans) join with local artists, crafters and business owners.  Capitol Hill's own Joe Snyder, creator of unforgettable house portraits will be on hand with a booth as well as Renee Farr, owner of Sapore Oil and Vinegar (store at 660 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE). Hello Cupcake, 705 8th Street, SE will be set up to tempt with new fall flavors from their booth; and, at Homebody (715 8th Street, SE) a storefront booth packed full of home essentials can be the start of your 2012 holiday home decor.

It all comes together each year on the first weekend of fall when Barracks Row becomes an urban wonderland full of only-in-DC sights, sounds, products and photo ops - just to prove it actually all happened. Above left, the Trapeze School New York performs on Silks up at tree top height as the appreciative crowd looks on. Mark your calendars - see you there!
