PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW KICKS OFF THE ALUMNI SERIES
With nine NWSA visual arts high school and college alumni returning to their alma mater's gallery, New World School of the Arts kicks off the Alumni Series in celebration of its 30th Anniversary. The first of five exhibitions, the Photography show includes traditional photography as well as installations and videography.
The exhibiting alumni, many of whom are already at NWSA, expressed their excitement in coming back to the school, "It's an honor to be here," said Zach Balber - BFA 2009. "What stands out for me about New World is that it's a family." Imani Nixon, a 2013 high school graduate, said "By coming back to New World School of the Arts I feel that I am giving back part of what was given to me." Imani remembers her relationship with the visual arts faculty, particularly the profound conversations they had together.
Both artists agreed on a piece of advice for NWSA students - "Don't ever give up and don't let a possible failure consume you." Maria Martinez-Cañas, professor of photography at NWSA echoed their sentiment and added, "You might get more rejection in life than acceptance, but the key is to learn from those instances of denial and continue your path by looking forward to special moments of success."
Opening Reception is today, September 8; 6 pm - 9 pm On view through September 30 New World Gallery 25 NE 2 Street, Miami Free and open to the public Information at 305-237-3620

RIGHT OF PASSAGE FOR COLLEGE THEATER FRESHMEN
The New World School of the Arts annual Freshman Discovery Project offers new college theater students their first performance opportunity at NWSA. With 39 participating college freshmen, the right of passage event is the theater division's "boot camp" - a tradition that has been part of the theater program for more than two decades. This year's Discovery Project theme is the Presidential Election and it is produced with only eight rehearsals directed, compiled and adapted by the Dean of Theater, Patrice Bailey. The project, which will be presented to NWSA students and faculty this Friday, offers college freshmen the opportunity to get to know each other and learn to work together as an ensemble. It also allows them to discover their abilities and skills by working in an intense rehearsal process.

 NWSA FACULTY RECITAL
New World School of the Arts music faculty members team up to offer an evening of enchanting songs, guitar virtuosity, and powerful chamber music. Voice faculty Jennifer Tipton, a welcomed addition to NWSA, performs Franz Schubert's haunting Der Erlkönig based on a poem by Johann Wolfgang Goethe depicting the death of a child assailed by a supernatural being, the Erlking, and his father riding a horse through the night to save his son. Megan Barrera, also new to the music program, performs Giacomo Puccini's sublime Chi il bel sogno di Doretta while Kimberly Soby performs Johann Strauss' Ich Schwebe. On the guitar, Marco Sartor, another new faculty member, performs Joaquin Rodrigo's Fandango and Zapateado from Three Spanish Pieces. Dean of Music, Daniel Andai, rounds off the evening of music as he joins viola faculty Richard Fleischman, piano faculty Ciro Fodere and guest cellist, Ashley Garritson, in Johannes Brahms' grand Piano Quartet in G minor, op. 25.
