A WARM WELCOME FROM THE LEADERSHIP OF NWSA: DR. JEFFREY HODGSON, PROVOST AND EVONNE ALVAREZ, HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
We want to welcome all of our colleagues, students, friends and supporters back for this exciting 30th Anniversary year at New World School of the Arts. We have the distinct privilege to lead this unique institution which provides students of Miami-Dade County and beyond the very best in arts training. We have been preparing all summer for a school year that will place an emphasis upon some of the outstanding alumni of New World School of the Arts who will be involved in performances and exhibitions throughout the school year. This brings opportunities for our students to interact with these alumni and learn first-hand how studies at New World School of the Arts can lead to professional careers in the arts. And as usual, this year will be packed with outstanding student performances and exhibitions showcasing the incredible talents of our students as they grow and develop under the guidance of NWSA's outstanding faculty. This week is just the beginning of a school year filled with excitement and so much to celebrate! We hope all of you will join us as we celebrate the accomplishments earned over 30 years and the promise of an equally bright and hopeful future.

DAVID KWIAT, NWSA FACULTY MEMBER IS RECOGNIZED FOR HIS REMARKABLE CONTRIBUTION TO THEATER
New World School of the Arts theater faculty David Kwiat has been honored with the 2016 award for Outstanding Contribution to Florida's Colleges and Universities. Bestowed by the Florida Theatre Conference, the award recognizes contributing efforts in the area of Community Theatre, Professional Theatre, University/College Theatre, Theatre for Youth, and High School Theatre. "To be recognized by one's peers is always the greatest honor," expressed Kwiat. "I gladly share this honor with all the faculty and staff in the Theater Division as well as our Dean because I know that each and every one of our committed faculty strives daily for the betterment of the students we serve. For the past 27 years, the prize has always been the privilege of teaching at New World School of the Arts."
Created in 1986, the program allows the general membership board to nominate candidates based upon their service to the organization and field in the state of Florida, while making a difference in their area. The honor will be presented to David during a ceremony at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida.
David Kwiat is the recipient of an Endowed Teaching Chair and his many performances in South Florida have earned him two Carbonell Awards. Other recognitions include the New Times Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor awards and the Bill Hindman Award for long-term career achievement in the South Florida Arts Community. In addition to Kwiat's noteworthy career in theater, he has authored John Barrymore: Confessions of an Actor - performed at the Edinburgh International Theater Festival, The King's Head Theatre in London and throughout the United States. Kwiat's collection of poetry, A Traveler in Residence, was also performed at the New Theatre's Miami in the Millennium Play Festival.
Currently, professor Kwiat is starring in Markus Potter and David Holthouse's adaptation of the riveting true story "Stalking the Bogeyman." In the roles of Robert Holthouse - the protagonist's father, and Emmit - a gun dealer, David delivers a stellar performance in a play that explores the darkest corners of human behavior and exposes the hidden truths of sexual abuse. Stalking the Bogeyman is playing at GableStage through August 28, under the meticulous direction of Joseph Adler.
Meanwhile, the audience can also catch an evening of David Kwiat's prose during a reading of his original poetry. "As an actor, teacher and poet, I love both the spoken and written word." Said Kwiat. "As a performer, I am keenly aware of my audience and I think that informs my poetry a lot. As an actor the last thing I would ever want to do is bore an audience. Poetry is no different. I want to convey a concise message and make sure there is a palpable impact. As a writer, I want the reader to journey through my life experience as a mirror of their own personal history."GableStage

PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW KICKS OFF THE VISUAL ARTS ALUMNI EXHIBITION SERIES
The NWSA Visual Arts division will offer a series of alumni-driven exhibitions in celebration of New World School of the Arts' 30th Anniversary, kicking off the season with Photography. The Alumni Series: Photography show highlights the work of nine high school and college graduates who will be presenting new work that consists of traditional photography, while others will focus on photo installations and videography. The exhibiting alumni, who are coming back to NWSA from around the globe to join the celebration, will also offer lecture series and critiques alongside current photography students from the high school and the college programs. The five celebratory shows that will be exhibited during this milestone year are Photography, Art & Technology, Drawing + Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Design.
Tammy Cedre, one of the exhibiting artists explains the work she will be exhibiting in the show: "Recently, I began a body of work in Puerto Rico that discusses the colonization of the island in relationship to its current economic troubles. As Puerto-Ricans, we have endured our scattering to the states. In a twist of irony, the "rich port" that once fed the U.S. with booming agricultural resources and pharmaceutical labs is now in the midst of food shortages and a healthcare crisis. Using an advertising aesthetic that was popularized during the height of tourism on the island in the 1950s, I seek to reconstruct the exoticized narrative of Puerto Rico as a travel destination and reveal the sordid histories behind America's last colony."
September 8 - September 30 Opening Reception: September 8; 6 pm - 9 pm New World Gallery 25 NE 2 Street, Miami Free and open to the public Information at 305-237-3620

ROSIE HERRERA (2006 Dance) "CARNE VIVA"
Rosie Herrera Dance Theater performed at New York City's Joyce Theater earlier this month, presenting her new work "Carne Viva" along with her noted work from 2009, "Various Stages of Drowning: A Cabaret." The company featured a number of New World School of the Arts alumni performers including Leah Verrier-Dunn, Ivonne Batanero, Loren Davidson, Luis Cuevas, and Andrea Murillo. Jerry Hochman of CriticalDance described the performance as: ". . . visually stimulating, iconoclastic. . . and obviously conceived by Herrera with intelligence and considerable choreographic capability." RENATA EASTLICK (2010 Theater) "OPERATION SKULL RAIN"
Cast as "Caveira" Renata Eastlick's voice embodies the female combatant named Taina "Caveira" Pereira, one of the two Brazilian operators in the new Brazilian-themed downloadable content (DLC) for Rainbow Six Siege's, Operation Skull Rain. "Voice acting for video games has been a dream of mine for years," explained Eastlick, who graduated from the NWSA College Theater program in 2010. "As a trained theatrical actor, I never realized how much of that technique can apply to voice over. You need it! Having good diction, characterization and telling the story through your voice are important skills you have to have in voice over acting. I can't thank my professors at New World School of the Arts enough for guiding me and teaching me how to convey a story through the musicality of my voice." Renata joins distinguished cast member Angela Basset who voices the role "Six" in Siege, among other notable actors. Rainbow Six Siege was first released in December 2015 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
