NWSA ALUMNI PAVING THE WAY FOR THEIR PEERS
While our graduating college and high school students make way for the new chapter in their lives, those who walked the checkerboard floors of New World School of the Arts, who found inspiration in the studios, and who proudly shared their art form with the NWSA family continue to pave the way for the new generation of artists, and inspire through their achievements.
Alana Arenas [Theater - High School 1998] was recognized this month with the prestigious Lucille Lortel Award in the category of "Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play" for 'Head of Passes' by fellow NWSA alum Tarell Alvin McCraney. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Lucille Lortel Award is produced by the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers by special arrangement with the Lucille Lortel Foundation. The distinction recognizes excellence in New York Off-Broadway theater.
Alex Lacamoire [Music - High School 1992] hailed by many as the man behind the sound of 'Hamilton', garnered a Tony Award nomination in the category of "Best Orchestration" for the musical that swept this year's Tony Award nominations. Lacamoire already has one Tony Award on the shelf for the musical 'In the Heights', along with two Grammy Awards - one for each of the two musicals.
Yazzmeen Laidler [Dance - High School 2012] was recently invited to join the distinguished Ailey II Company, where she will join fellow NWSA alumni Annellyse Munroe and Jacoby Pruitt. Ailey II was established in 1974 and, under the direction of Sylvia Waters, has flourished into one of the most popular dance companies in the country.
Katerina McCrimmon and Sean Stack [Theater - High School 2016] have been selected Presidential Scholars in the Arts from a pool of 11,000 talented artists from across the nation. Along with 18 other students, Katerina and Sean were nominated based on their artistic and academic achievements as well as their personal characteristics and leadership abilities. The coveted honor will be presented next month at the White house in Washington D.C. The two triple-threat students mark the 17th and 18th Presidential Scholar in the Arts for New World School of the Arts.

THOUGHT-PROVOKING PLAY CLOSES THEATER SEASON
New World School of the Arts high school theater program concludes the academic year with O Beautiful, written by Theresa Rebeck on commission for the professional actors at the University of Delaware. Directed by Stuart Meltzer, NWSA alumnus, theater faculty and Artistic Director of Zoetic Stage, the play written in 2011, is a poignant production that addresses uncomfortable topics and explores how these coexist in a universe where religion and politics are king. Date rape, suicide, bullying, and abortion quickly surface but the desperate quest for answers from the young protagonists makes the 110-minute play linger long after the curtains have closed.
Meltzer explains, "O Beautiful is a dark and tragic comedy dealing with contemporary American life mashed up with visits from our founding fathers at a turning point in America. With the cries of gun regulation from certain corners of our society and many pleas falling on deaf ears our country has a problem and O Beautiful examines freedom and the rights of every American and what happens when those freedoms are abused."

JAZZ CONCERT WITH PHIL DOYLE
The NWSA High School Jazz Combos, directed by Jim Gasior, will perform with guest artist saxophonist Phil Doyle, who began his music career at the University of Miami as a scholarship student. "Phil Doyle brings a special energy to the rehearsals," said Daniel Andai, NWSA dean of music. "His methodical instruction and devotion to music is evident with every note played. The students lighten up in their rehearsals with him, and I'm confident that the performance will reflect this incredible impression they have of him, along with their passion for the music."
As a professional national and international touring musician, Doyle has appeared on the NBC Today Show, the Ellen Degeneres Show, PBS and others and has performed at venues across Italy, Australia, the Cayman Islands, Amsterdam, Canada, Hawaii, Kauai, as well as most of the continental United States.

HIGH SCHOOL INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES
The NWSA High School Symphony Orchestra, directed by Alfred Gershfeld, and
the NWSA Wind Ensemble, directed by Brent Mounger, will perform two monumental works in the final concert of the season. The Symphony Orchestra will interpret Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture while the Wind Ensemble will feature John Mackey's energy packed opus, Wine Dark Sea, in its entirety. Also featured in this concert will be eight world-premieres by NWSA college students and faculty members, Dr. Sue Epstein-Garcia, Dr. Fred Desena, and Director of Jazz Studies, Jim Gasior.
"The works are a culmination of a multi-session project in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami Dade County, to bring music, visual art, and storytelling together to inspire original works composed by NWSA composition students and performed by the NWSA instrumental students. This major initiative places the spotlight on compositions and instrumental students in a new and exciting way," said Daniel Andai, dean of dance at New World School of the Arts.
The compositions are written for symphony orchestra, wind ensemble and jazz ensemble. A video about the project will also be displayed. In addition to composing these works for large ensemble, the NWSA composition students participated in a three-day residency with famed composer and former President of the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, Robert Sirota. He spent time working with the student composers and the symphony orchestra, to work on composition elements through lessons, lectures and forums, to bring these story inspired compositions to life while providing insight on the business side of music as well as offering innovative ways to compose. This concert is a great example of community engagement by the faculty and students in the music division at NWSA to broaden possibilities for the students and enhance the curriculum to new heights.

"URGENT" SHOWCASES CUTTING-EDGE ARTWORKS
Urgent, New World School of the Arts' 2016 BFA final visual arts showcase is a group exhibition highlighting a variety of works from 28 visual artists of divergent disciplines. Professionally curated by NWSA dean of the visual arts program, Maggy Cuesta and gallerist Fredric Snitzer, this exhibition offers unique approaches to the process of making art in all mediums. "This conceptual and highly developed work is the result of our student's determination and training," explained Cuesta. "The show demonstrates their ability to take theory, concepts, and the skill they have honed throughout the years to create their final showcase before they enter the world of professional artists or continue to pursue their advanced degrees."
Among the works to be presented is Same? by Ramses Machado, who entered the NWSA BFA program with the intention of furthering his painting skills and later changed his major to graphic design. "This BFA work is the result of a four-year personal transition from fine arts to graphic design. My goal is to show the viewer what makes me different from other graphic designers featuring the similarities and differences."
Grace Berrios' Tongue Ambiguous explores the ambiguity of meaning that derives from language barriers. "The idea for the project came about as I looked back at my life and realized how the transition I made when I immigrated from Honduras to the United States changed me. Not knowing the language and having to learn it to effectively communicate with others, while still keeping an understanding of the world in my own language, affected the way I thought, the way I behaved, and the way I understood others."

SUMMER THEATER ACADEMY HELPS TALENTED LOW INCOME STUDENTS
New World School of the Arts will be offering its second Summer Theater Academy, a program designed to help talented, low-income students, entering 11th and 12th grades in the fall of 2016, gain a competitive edge in theater auditions through training for collegiate arts programs. This initiative is funded in part through a John S. and James L. Knight Foundation's Knight Arts Challenge grant, a funding initiative to help bring South Florida together through the arts and sponsored by The Miami Salon Group.
"There is an unparalleled opportunity through this grant to reach young students in our community who wouldn't normally have this type of opportunity," said Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, Provost of New World School of the Arts. "We want to shine a light on their talent and let them see the world can be their stage."
The all-inclusive program is FREE of charge with acceptance, for the two-week session. The session includes training, materials, lunches, snacks and field trips. A theater arts teacher must recommend the student.
