NEW PLAYWRIGHTS' FESTIVAL
The 2016 New Playwrights' Festival features eight original short plays written by current New World School of the Arts high school and college Students, including two student-directed and six faculty-directed productions. The festival allows young student playwrights the unique opportunity to experience what it is like to workshop an original play. "This year's plays run the gamut from the absurd to the tragic... from the ridiculous to the profound. These eight tightly written dramas display the best of what NWSA has to offer. Students are limited to eight characters and twenty pages, but beyond that the sky's the limit. The plays are chosen by a panel of five New World School of the Arts theatre division faculty members, which included Theater League Executive Director and Playwriting Instructor Andie Arthur. They are then workshopped by the faculty, or student directors, who help the playwrights revise and streamline the plays before they are mounted for production. The festival provides a tremendous opportunity for a young theater artist to see his or her play come to life," said Festival Coordinator, Pamela Roza Haye.
Among the plays to be presented this year is The Statue by Lisa Pertierra, Cookies by Allie Rothfield, Bruised by Austin Regalado, The Wandering Executioner by Jacob Herman, Rose Colored Glasses by Nick Valdes, The Exile of a Seahorse by Luis Roberto Herrera, The Savage by Armando Santana and Pillowtalk by Katerina McCrimmon.

MELODIES OF A FORGOTTEN INSTRUMENT
NWSA viola professor Richard Fleischman will perform a recital entitled Melodies of a Forgotten Instrument: The Rare Viola d'Amore. The program features music of the 19th and 20th centuries composed for the rarely heard 14-string instrument. Professor Fleischman is one of only a handful of viola d'amore players actively concertizing in the world. Accompanying Professor Fleischman will be guest harpist Deborah Fleisher and two New World School of the Arts college students: pianist Maria Elisabeta Zdralea and violist Srivishnu Ramankutty.
"The viola d'amore is a rare and unusual instrument that survives from the days when instrument makers were looking for bigger self-contained sounds and added sympathetic strings," explained Fleischman. "It has 14 strings, seven above and seven underneath that resonate when the upper ones are played. It's a special, silvery sound, and most of the time we hear it today in music of the Baroque but continued occasional popularity through the centuries. The reasons it is so rarely heard are numerous, but the complexity of playing the instrument itself is probably the primary reason. With 14 strings, it takes quite a while to tune! In spite of the difficulties, I really look forward to sharing this instrument and such rarely-heard music with South Florida audiences."

THRILLING COLLEGE SPRING DANCE CONCERT
The New World School of the Arts dance division again presents a thrilling evening of dance with the College Spring Dance Concert. This year's program offers a varied evening of six dance works including Robert Battle's powerful Mass, set to a driving percussion score by contemporary composer John Mackie. Robert Battle, NWSA dance alumnus and distinguished choreographer, is Artistic Director of New York City's renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Also on the program is the shimmering, witty contemporary work Metal Garden, by award-winning choreographer Sean Curran, Co-Artistic Director of Sean Curran Company which performed his most recent work, Dream'd in a Dream at the Brooklyn Academy of Music this fall to critical acclaim. Guest choreographer Darshan Singh Bhuller, working with computer graphic designers Paul Kaiser and Marc Downie (the Open-Ended Group) has created a haunting new work entitled Fade to Black, in which the virtual environment surrounds the dancers and moves with them. Peter London, NWSA faculty member and Artistic Director of Miami's Peter London Global Dance Company, has created the passionate new work Jill & Don, set to an upbeat jazz score referencing the jazz artists Jill Scott and Don Ellis. The program is completed with the work of two respected choreographers and NWSA faculty members - Gerard Ebitz' deftly and beautifully choreographed work, A Place I've Never Been and Rebecca Cannan's Jam Up, which converts the performance theater into the on-ramp of a modern metropolitan highway.

VISUAL ARTISTS EXPLORE ALTERNATE REALITIES
Alternate Realities 2016, the second exhibition of its kind presented by New World School of the Arts, attempts to question reality as we know it while highlighting the influential power designers have in regards to creating the illusion of authenticity. The designers involved in this show present vastly different premises that parallel our own reality to a convincing degree. Imagine a world where language has been conquered by science... where languages are bottled and can be bought by anyone for instant fluency; or a world where a common transit sign performs its core function but also stimulates positivism... where signs would allow a viewer's subconscious to absorb and decipher, while eventually impacting its community through repeated visual interaction; or a world where humankind has destroyed their echo system to such an extent that nature exists as a luxury... where the small and often overlooked spider web is now viewed as a necessity and something of value.
By transporting the viewer to various worlds, each drastically unlike the other, Alternate Realities 2016 demonstrates how graphic design can go beyond the constraints of printed matter and create an engaging experience.

NCMPR presented the awards last month during its three-day national conference in St. Louis, Missouri. The recognition was presented in the category of Annual Report for NWSA's 2014-2015 Year in Review Magazine. HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR PERFORMS IN NEW YORK CITY
The singers of New World School of the Arts High School Choir recently experienced their latest adventure in New York City, traveling to participate in the Choirs of America Performance series in celebration of Carnegie Hall's 125th Anniversary Season. While in NYC, they performed at Lincoln Center as part of the Young Music Makers Series and performed in Lefrak Concert Hall at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College, working with adjudicators on stage. In addition to other workshops, the students had an invaluable private workshop with Goeffrey Boers and Janet Galvin, however, one of the highlights of the experience for many of them was working with composer Z. Randall Stroope. The young musicians' artistic experience was complete when they offered a few impromptu performances in Central Park and other locations around the city. All of the workshops and rehearsals led up to the ultimate performance just last week, when New World School of the Arts Choir was among ten choirs that performed in Carnegie Hall.
