RISING STARS SHINE BRIGHT IN DOWNTOWN MIAMI! MARCH 17; 5 PM - 10 PM
Rising Stars, a professionally staged, energy packed, one-of-a-kind performance, presents the extraordinary talent of high school and college students from New World School of the Arts, Florida's premier arts institution. The showcase begins at the New World Gallery with a juried visual arts exhibition featuring impressive student artworks. The show, as diverse as the school population, includes painting, drawing, design, sculpture, digital media and installations. The evening continues just a few blocks away at the historic Olympia Theater with a pre-performance VIP Reception to welcome guests to this artistic landmark. Following the reception, the performance showcases excerpts from works performed by the high school and the college students during the school year.
Among the works to be presented by the NWSA Theater division is the iconic scene 'Stella' from A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, one of the great architects of the American theater. The Theater division will also delight the audience with a lively gospel number from the musical The Children of Eden, a simple story about family; and more specifically, about fathers and children with Music and Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz book by John Caird. From the Tony Award winning musical Evita, by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Lyrics by Tim Rice, Rising Stars will feature Eva Peron's "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" exhorting the people of Argentina not to mourn her. Performed by selected NWSA College dancers from the NWSA Dance division, the beautiful and lyrical dance Mass, choreographed by NWSA alumnus Robert Battle - now Artistic Director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater company - was set on the NWSA dancers by Ailey dancer Elisa Clark (formerly a dancer in Mr. Battle's company, Battleworks) to an evocative percussion score by contemporary composer, John Mackie. Kindapalooza, choreographed by Tina Santos, will highlight the talent of the High School dancers in an exuberant fun-filled choreography that reprises a prior work, Jazzapalooza, with new choreography and an outstanding cast. The Music division's program will be just as exciting. The NWSA choir, under the direction of Dr. Alan Denning, will perform Dan Forrest's luscious work entitled You Are the Music while the NWSA Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Brent Mounger, will highlight John Mackey's Wine-Dark Sea, based on the historical novel in the Aubrey-Maturin Series by British author Patrick O'Brian. Also on the program will be the famed NWSA Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jim Gasior and the NWSA Symphony Orchestra under the baton of maestro Alfred Gershfeld, performing Gioachino Rossini's Overture to The Barber of Seville.

MAJOR BARBARA GRACES THE STAGE OF NWSA
George Bernard Shaw welcomes spring at New World School of the Arts with his masterpiece production, Major Barbara, presented by more than a dozen college theater students. Directed by guest artist and former NWSA faculty member, Andrew Noble, the popular play wittily explores the privileged world of the British upperclass, familiar to audiences of Downtown Abbey, against a background of social deprivation.
Written and premiered in 1905 by the Royal Court Theatre in London, Major Barbara didn't see its North America debut until ten years later, in 1915. Since then, the play has enjoyed just a handful of revivals, with a Tony award and other award nominations. The play centers on the formidable Lady Britomart Undershaft, who in order to keep up appearances, must find dowries for her two daughters and an inheritance for her son. The plot thickens with her quest to introduce her three children to their estranged father - her husband - a millionaire munitions manufacturer. Tensions rise as the elder daughter, Barbara Undershaft, a Salvation Army Major, contests with her father the "relationship between money, power and moral purpose", decrying his belief that "there are two things necessary for salvation...money and gunpowder."

DONIZETTI'S COMIC MASTERPIECE L'ELISIR D'MORE
The New World Opera Theatre Ensemble will present L'elisir d'more, the most popular of Gaetano Donizetti's operas, frequently performed professionally as well as in college productions. The timeless melodrama contains one of the most famous and captivating tenor arias, "Una furtive lagrima". The beautiful tunes come one after another throughout this opera, which contains both sharp comedy and heartfelt pathos.
"The New World production is honored to feature a special guest director and singer, Ardean Landhuis, who has a vast resume as a performer and designer," said Daniel Andai, NWSA dean of music. "Ardean will direct an updated version of the opera and sing the pivotal of Doctor Dulcamara, the traveling salesman."
The show takes place in a New England fishing village in 1943. It is the time just after the Great Depression and just before World War 2. The story is a love triangle between a single woman who owns the local fishing fleet, a young fisherman, & a Navy officer. The magical elixir is in reality Bordeaux wine. But a traveling salesman convinces the young fisherman that this elixir will help him win over his secret crush, on the woman, who is essentially his boss.

DADE DELEGATION SPORTED FASHIONABLE ACCESSORIES DESIGNED BY NWSA ARTIST
New World School of the Arts graphic designer John Soto had the opportunity to travel to Tallahassee during the Legislative Session several weeks ago to represent NWSA and introduce his new fashion sense - the 2016 Dade Days in Tallahassee Ties and Scarves. "The design is the result of the Miami-Days Competition," explained Maggy Cuesta, dean of visual arts at NWSA. "This is an almost three-decades old, judged competition, that is open to all NWSA college graphic designers, which allows the winner to see his or her design mass-produced and distributed in our nation's capital. More importantly, this competition highlights the importance of our state's legislative process and the role our community plays in the process."
The Dade Days Ties and Scarves are limited edition items and each realized design becomes highly coveted among political, community and civic leaders who look forward to expanding their collection with the beautiful cutting edge accessories created by NWSA college students. In addition to seeing his design come to fruition and being recognized for his creativity, John's experience included interacting with key political figures during the session and even having photo ops to capture the moment. Among the dignitaries John met was Chairman Board of Miami-Dade County Commissioners, Jean Monestime; Miami-Dade County Mayor, Carlos Gimenez; Florida Senator, Anitere Flores; and State Attorney for Miami-Dade, Katherine Fernandez Rundle.
"Having the opportunity to travel to Tallahassee and seeing my design featured at Miami-Dade County Days 2016, was an amazing experience!" said Soto. "Meeting community leaders and seeing their reaction towards the design I made was great. I witnessed a few 'aha moments' when people spotted their own zip code [part of the design] and that was entertaining. I was specially honored to see people wearing their ties and scarves proudly. From flight attendants to city officials - they all made me feel humble and grateful. A sincere thank you to all of them, as well as to my professor Rosario Martinez-Cañas and classmates for their unconditional support in this journey."

NWSA PROFESSOR RECEIVES THE NESTOR TORRES CULTURAL AMBASSADOR AWARD IN TALLAHASSEE
John Soto's graphic design professor, Rosario Martínez-Cañas, also has good reason to celebrate as does the whole NWSA visual arts division. An active advocate for the arts not only in the classroom but also in Tallahassee, each year Rosario takes great pride in overseeing the Dade Days Tie and Scarf competition, directing the assignment and even joining the circle of judges. Her task however, does not conclude once the winning design is produced. Rosario eagerly accompanies the winning student to Tallahassee to continue her support and sponsorship, a task she takes very seriously and prepares for well in advance.
This year Martínez-Cañas was met with an unexpected and very welcoming surprise - she was awarded the prestigious Nestor Torres Ambassador of the Arts Award, an award bestowed on those who have either made a difference or devoted their lives to advancing the arts.
"I'm honored and humbled by this recognition," said Rosario. "I've dedicated my life to my passion and this has brought me great satisfaction. To share my art and my knowledge with my students and to see them excel and become contributing citizens of our community, however, is incomparable to anything else. This award is very special to me - it embodies all that I believe in."
Other New World School of the Arts members who have received the Nestor Torres Ambassador of the Arts Award include Daniel Lewis, former dean of dance and Patrice Bailey, dean of theater at NWSA.

VIOLISTS CONVERGE FOR A DAY OF VIOLAFEST!
The NWSA Music division presented its 2nd Annual ViolaFest!, a celebration of the larger sister of the violin. While the violin has reaped much of the musical limelight due to its great power and scintillating high register, the mellow, lower-pitched viola has only come into its own during the last century. Viola players (or violists) from all over Florida and even as far away as Texas converged upon NWSA's music building and Wolfson Auditorium for a day-long celebration led by longtime NWSA Viola Professor Richard Fleischman. The day's events included Master Classes, interactive classes on Jazz Improvisation, developing stage presence, a lecture/performance about the Rare Viola d'amore, performances by Guest ViolaFest! Faculty and culminated in a memorable evening performance of the ViolaFest! Orchestra, consisting of more than 40 viola players. Many of the participants in the first ViolaFest! in 2015 returned for the 2016 event. Leading up to ViolaFest! Professor Fleischman coordinated other "viola-centric" events for NWSA that included Master Classes with Teng Li, renowned Principal Violist of the Toronto Symphony, and Laura Bossert, viola professor at the Longy School in Boston. Fleischman also presented a solo viola recital with guest artists from the NWSA Faculty. Professor Fleischman plans to make ViolaFest! 2017, an even larger and more exciting event.
