THE COUNTRY WIFE HIGHLIGHTS COLLEGE TALENT
The New World School of the Arts College juniors will present The Country Wife by English dramatist William Wycherley as a studio play. Considered one of the great comedies of the Restoration period, Wycherley's comedy first performed in 1675, like many Comedies of Manners, focuses on sexual relations as its primary theme. Director of the play, NWSA theater faculty member James Randolph highlights, "As a piece of literature it simply reflects the strongest drive of human existence, sex. As satire, the characters personify human traits, which show the foibles of the rich. The time period was rife with the pursuit of pleasure and acquisition of lands, property and money. When seeing these plays they show us ourselves, both then and now."
William Wycherley was one of London's leading wits and was sponsored at court by the Duke of Buckingham, a favorite of Charles II. After a number of successful plays, Wycherley went to sea and fought in the Dutch wars. As he was recovering from illness the King gave him money in France and promised to make him a tutor to one of the princes. Instead, Wycherley married a wealthy jealous countess and lost favor of the King. When Wycherley's wife died, he lost everything, spent time in debtors' prison before Charles II's successor James II paid his bills and gave him a small pension.

CHILDREN OF EDEN TAKE THE STAGE
The NWSA High School theater students welcome the holiday season with John Caird's Children of Eden. With music and lyrics by Steven Schwartz, the musical was originally conceived as a much shorter work titled Family Tree. It has seen successful production runs on London's West End and has become a staple of the regional and community theater circuit.
NWSA faculty member and director of the play, Bruce Cohen explains, "Indeed, Schwartz himself cites it as his favorite of all of his shows and the one he is most proud of musically. That is saying something when you consider that Godspell, Pippin, Rags and Wicked are all counted in the Schwartz canon. Children of Eden is generally approached on an epic scale. And the show does lend itself to a certain grandiose quality. The music is often monumentally heroic and, although these parts of the show are truly inspiring and exciting, it is the quieter and much more intimate moments that I find most engaging about this piece. At its core, Children of Eden is a simple story about family; and more specifically, about fathers and children."

THE NUTCRACKER
The Nutcracker Ballet has been a holiday tradition for decades, as families return year after year to join Clara in her adventures. From a grand Christmas party with a mysterious guest, to toys that come to life, to a battle between mice, soldiers, King Rat and the Nutcracker, to her magical visit to the Land of Snow and Land of Sweets, this ballet is for many children, a first experience with live dance performance.
The performance by The Thomas Arthur Youth Ballet, in partnership with New World School of the Arts, is extravagant in its size and scope, and honors the traditions of classical ballet and the extraordinary score by Peter llyich Tchaikovsky. This collaboration with NWSA's dance division faculty, staff, and students brings these two organizations together to produce this annual, outstanding production of The Nutcracker. Auditions and rehearsals begin in August and take place in the dance studios of New World School of the Arts.
In addition to the general public performance on December 5, there are three morning performances (December 2, 3, 4) for invited school audiences from all over Miami-Dade County, including a sensory-friendly performance for young people and their families - one of the first of its kind.
December 5; 7:00 PM Mami-Dade County Auditorium 2901 West Flagler, Miami General admission $15 - $35 Information at 305-237-3341

The new wave of twenty-five 2015 YoungArts winners brings the total to around 275 awards for New World School of the Arts. "The NWSA family is elated and extremely proud of all of the students recognized by the YoungArts Foundation," said Evonne Alvarez, High School Principal at New World School of the Arts. During a recent exchange with the students, some shared how they feel about their most recent accomplishments and about their lives as young emerging artists in our community. Visual artist Giselle Beltran said, "As a developing artist and student growing up in Miami I find myself standing in an extremely fortunate position. I am grateful to be living in a community that is so encouraging and supportive of young artists like myself. I am very excited to have the opportunity to continue exploring while also engaging with other young artists of the community," while Khandis Merritt, from the theater division noted, "Knowing that all my hard work paid off is really rewarding.
