ADD MORE VALUE TO YOUR GIFT ON GIVE MIAMI DAY - NOVEMBER 19
The past two years have been stellar for New World School of the Arts, as friends and art enthusiasts supported our programs with their generous donations during GIVE MIAMI DAY.

The one-day a year where you can maximize your nonprofit gift, Give Miami Day has been hailed as the most exciting "giving" day in South Florida - and now you too can be part of it.

On Thursday, November 19, any donation you make to support New World School of the Arts will receive a percentage match from The Miami Foundation. By supporting NWSA, you will foster our students' will to achieve their artistic dreams and realize their passion, and will help make our South Florida community one of the most dynamic arts centers in the world.

"The training that you get at a conservatory program like New World is irreplaceable." Rosie Herrera, 2006, Dance.

Like us on Facebook NWSA ARTSEEN BFA STUDENTS GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
The New World School of the Arts visual arts students, in collaboration with the United States Attorney's Office Southern District of Florida (USAFLS), began a mentoring program to bring the arts into MDCPS, K-8 classrooms. "The program is designed to introduce students to creative possibilities, at a young age, through painting, drawing and other visual arts techniques," explained Maggy Cuesta, dean of visual arts at NWSA. "This effort not only allows these children to explore their own abilities as artists, it offers an avenue for our own college students to give back to the community. Artseen allows NWSA college juniors and seniors to receive mentorship while fostering creative exploration. It's only fitting that these students pass on this generosity onto the younger generation of potential artists."

Paul Lawrence Dunbar K-8 Centers was selected by USAFLS to run the pilot earlier this week, engaging seven NWSA students from visual arts college program to jumpstart the program. Surrounded by twenty-five 5th and 6th graders eager to get their hands on colorful pastels and charcoals, the NWSA mentors dedicated an afternoon to the students, teaching them about the different visual art mediums, exploring their artistic skills, and experimenting with collage making.

Artseen is a 10,000 square foot studio and collaborative space in downtown Miami. A satellite space that belongs to New World School of the Arts, Artseen offers 32 studios to NWSA college juniors and seniors each year. There is also a conference room, a lecture room and gathering area that promotes student / alumni interaction, collaboration and artistic brainstorming.

Like us on Facebook FALL DANCE CONCERT OFFERS VIBRANT PROGRAM
Featuring New World School of the Arts High School and College dancers, the Fall Dance Celebration offers a dynamic and varied evening of choreography that highlights ballet, modern and hip-hop styles. Among the choreography that will be presented is Sunshine State, a lively contemporary ballet by Gerard Ebitz. Choreographed by NWSA alum, former Alvin Ailey dancer, Uri Sands, Earth portrays dramatic geological and climatic global events with powerful contemporary intensity. With his wife Toni Pierce Sands Sands, Uri is currently the co-director of Minneapolis' highly regarded TU Dance Company. An excerpt of Asuka captivates the audience with vibrant Cuban music and rhythms of yesteryear. Through his choreography Eduardo Vilaro, Artistic Director NYC's Ballet Hispanico, explores the life and music of Cuban salsa queen Celia Cruz. Choreographed by Darshan Singh Bhuller, Follies is a darkly whimsical contemporary dance piece which touches on the value of dancing, playfully interacting with texts from television and film, along with a fantastical virtual environment designed by British filmmakers Kit Monkman & Tom Wexler. SOME GOOD OLD NEW, choreography by Kehynde Hill, a local hip-hop choreographer with extensive professional credits in a variety of venues, blends lindy, hip-hop, contemporary dance and numerous other genres into an upbeat evocation of 1940's New York City.

Enjoy a stroll down Miami Beach's Lincoln Road on November 22, 2015 and ultimately find your way into the Colony Theater for scenes of opera favorites performed by members of the NWSA Opera Theater Ensemble, directed by Rodney Miller. You'll hear works by Mozart, Menotti, Verdi, Bizet, and Strauss, with emphases on characterization and stagecraft, while using minimalist approaches to the settings. This baccalaureate opera program provides students with the opportunity to perform great classics of the operatic repertoire, and this presentation kicks off a season that will include Donizetti's The Elixir of Love in a fully staged production at the Lehman Theater on the Miami Dade College North Campus in April. "Our goal is to challenge and inspire young, developing vocal artists and to give them the opportunity to perform and learn in a professional and supportive environment," says Rodney Miller, Director of the NWSA Opera Theater Ensemble.

Here and Now is the title bestowed upon the New World School of the Arts annual exhibition that sets the wheels in motion, during the week-long Art Basel Fair, at the Yard@CasaLin in Wynwood. Under the guidance of NWSA dean of visual arts Maggy Cuesta, "the show this year offers continuous motion of unexpected performances during the three hour opening." With four permanent performative installations canvasing the beautiful oasis that is the Yard, "every guest will have his own experience which continues to change and morph as the minutes go by," added Maggy.

With movement as the guiding theme, the show is comprised of four permanent installations in constant motion. In addition, Here and Now will have an element of surprise as different visual artists from the New World School of the Arts BFA program intersperse unexpected performances throughout the morning show. "The exhibition will have the feel of a flash-mob, with sudden bursts of short yet powerful artistic presentations," explained Maggy. "It will be a fun experience for arts enthusiasts who, as they do year after year, begin their Art Basel tour at the Yard@ CasaLin, experiencing not only the creative program, but also enjoying the natural setting along with a Cuban cafecito or a freshly pressed Guarapo (sugar cane juice)."

The work is presented by New World School of the Arts college students, working in collaboration with faculty members Alisa Pitchenik-Charles, Carol Todaro, Donald Lambert and Ralf Provisero.

Like us on Facebook ANNUAL CONCERTO COMPETITION WINNERS
The winners of the annual NWSA Concerto Competition have been announced, and they are ready to showcase their skills on stage as soloists with the NWSA Symphony Orchestra at the Colony Theater in Miami Beach. The concerto competition is an incredible tool for aspiring artists at NWSA. It provides an opportunity for students to put their best foot forward with an aim of rising to the top. A competition of this magnitude requires a great deal of investment from the participants, through countless hours practicing, working with faculty in lessons, rehearsing with accompanists, and finally, preparing for the big day. Any student who is given the chance to compete will benefit from the experience at any of these levels. Congratulations to all our winners - Maria Elizabeta Zdralea, piano; Sanae Kodaira, cello; Vishnu Ramankutty, viola; Jessica Sanz, mezzo-soprano; Janay Delisma, soprano; Martin Mayo, oboe - we look forward to enjoying your performances!
