Like us on Facebook STRAWBERRY THEATER FESTIVAL HONORS NWSA STUDENTS
What would you do if someone invaded your home and tried to kick you out? Dominic Servidio, college senior in the NWSA music theater program, answered this question through his award-winning one-person show, CASPER THE NOT SO FRIENDLY GHOST, just this summer during the Strawberry Theater Festival in NYC. Patrice Bailey, dean of theater at NWSA highlighted, "It is always the hope that students in the theater division will take what they have learned and perform outside of the college in a professional venue."

Directed by fellow NWSA alum, Christopher Michaels and performed by NWSA's Alfie Ramirez and Krystel Mills alongside Aly Pentangelo, Servidio's 15-minute play was presented off-Broadway garnering the honor of BEST PLAY. The young playwright/actor/singer's theater credits include Into the Woods, A Little Night Music and Choir Boy, among others.
Armando Santana, another NWSA student, was also recognized during this year's festival earning the title of BEST DIRECTOR for his one-act play, POOR, POOR ELEANOR. Armando not only directed the play but also shared the stage with NWSA alum Jean Louis Droulers, and Sheri Wieseman.

"To witness two plays that were originally written and performed for the NWSA annual Playwright's Festival find an audience at the Strawberry Festival in NYC and win Best Play and Best Director is really what the theater division strives to accomplish for our students," said Dean Bailey.

Celebrating its 28th season, The Riant Theater's Strawberry Theater Festival was created by Artistic Director, Van Dirk Fisher as a play competition in which the audience and the theatre's judges vote to select the best play of the season. The festival is presented twice a year in New York City and it receives hundreds of plays from around the country for their opportunity to join the growing list of winners. Through a selection process, the 1st round of one-act plays move to the Semi-Finals and then the Finals, where one play is selected for Best Play, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress. The playwright of the winning play receives $1,500 and the opportunity to have a full-length play developed by the Riant. "Dominic and Armando are to be congratulated for their initiative, hard work and performances in bringing their plays to the festival and representing New World School of the Arts in such an outstanding manner," concluded Bailey.

The United States Air Force Band of the West will be performing brass ensemble repertoire for students in the NWSA Wind Ensemble. "We are so lucky to have the United States Air Force Band of the West come to NWSA and do a workshop with students of the NWSA Wind Ensemble," said Daniel Andai, dean of music at NWSA. "Last year, a similar workshop was held with the United States Air Force Band Brass in Blue, conducted by a NWSA Alum. These events are important for our students' development because they learn about the skill of chamber music, collaboration, and even specific information about their individual instruments." Created in 1941 at Moffett Field, California, The USAF Band of the West has been recognized numerous times by Colonel George S. Howard Citation of Musical Excellence for Military Concert Bands. The band also received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award for the ninth time in 2012 due to its exemplary contributions to Air Force recruiting and community relations programs. The USAF Band of the West is renowned for its highly-trained professional musicians who honor their country through their music. Traveling more than 125,000 miles in the US Southwest region, the USAF of the West performs for military as well as civilian audiences.
