Like us on Facebook GREETINGS FROM NWSA PROVOST, DR. JEFFREY HODGSON
The start of the school year for me is the juxtaposition of the new and the familiar. For educators, the faculty, administration and staff, it is a return to the familiar rhythm of the school year which starts building on the work in the studios that eventually leads to juries, performances and finally graduation. For the incoming freshman students (both in the high school and college) it is a new and exciting start on their artistic pathways. The creative process blends these two factors as well. Familiar works of art, choreography, operas, symphonies, musicals and plays are made new and fresh as interpreted by burgeoning young artists. Welcome back to a wonderful year destined to be both familiar and new but always filled with creativity.

NWSA continues to thrive as one of the top schools in the country and I congratulate all of our students for their outstanding achievements! As we prepare to open school this year, we reflect on the high expectations that we all hold ourselves to and will aim to surpass those. When I think about the NWSA family, this quote from Steve Jobs  comes to mind: "Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected." I look forward to another incredible year of accelerated student achievement, outstanding performances and exhibitions!

Like us on Facebook COLLEGE ORIENTATION WEEK
While students are enjoying their last days of summer, we are working hard to ensure a pleasant and exciting welcome. By now NWSA college students are finalizing plans for their life in downtown Miami, and the NWSA family is eagerly awaiting their arrival. The first step for newly admitted students begins with Parent/Student Day, where the administrative staff and Orientation Leaders provide an introduction to New World School of the Arts' renowned programs and rich traditions. Parents and students also get to enjoy a special student/faculty performance. The remainder of the week is for new students to get acquainted with one another, while learning about school policies, procedures, and academic requirements. Also included this year is a community service activity with Feeding South Florida, and a relaxing day at Venetian Pool in Coral Gables.

This year's New Student Orientation is about making connections to all that New World School of the Arts has to offer. Students' time here will go by fast and this week will allow them to connect with their peers. Orientation Week allows students to imagine their possibilities, explore opportunities, and take advantage of the many programs and services we offer to maximize their education both in and out of the classroom. We look forward to a year filled with excitement, performances, exhibitions and most importantly, engagement and creativity!

New World School of the Arts BFA '15 visual artist, Rafael Domenech, is among the 12 artists who comprise the Tulsa Artist Fellowship's (TAF) inaugural class, announced The George Kaiser Family Foundation in Tulsa Arizona. Hailing from nine different states, the class includes artists specializing in weaving, sculpting, installations, painting and public art. Possessing a wide variety of experiences and talents, the fellows will be immersed into the local art scene through gallery shows, community-wide art festivals and First Friday Art Crawls. Rafael Domenech is an artist who focuses on the history of places and its connection to the place in his art. Comfortable working with multiple materials on different scales, he aims to create a connection between geographical locations and their social history through large-scale installations. Rafael's work has resulted in five solo exhibitions and seven group exhibitions, along with several collections. He was also the recipient of the Frances Wolfson Art Scholarship in 2012. Rafael received his BFA on April 2015 from New World School of the Arts, where he was Valedictorian and majored in painting. A Tulsa-based artist recruitment and retention program, TAF offers a generous package to early- and mid-career artists. The selected artists will receive a stipend ranging from $15,000 to $40,000 and, in most cases, free housing and studio workspace. The program seeks talented and diverse voices to support Tulsa's expanding arts scene. The fellowship will begin on January 4, 2016.

Damion Bradbury, BFA '15, and Vitolio Jeune, BFA '09, recently performed in honor of Geoffrey Holder, the eminent late dancer, choreographer, painter, designer and actor. The performance was presented as part of Outdoors at Lincoln Center, in New York City, and it featured Garth Fagan Dance Company alongside the elegant guest Carmen de Lavellade, Holder's partner of 59 years. Among the choreography presented was Prelude (1981-83), Oatka Trail (1979), Passion Distanced (1987) and Thanks Forty (Five) (2010). "It was inspiring to see our two alumni - Damion and Vitolio - performing as part of this historic tribute to Geoffrey Holder," said Mary Lisa Burns, Dean of the Dance division at NWSA, who attended the dance concert along with other faculty and NWSA alumni. "The Outdoors at Lincoln Center audience was filled to capacity, and cheering on these two exceptional dancers were also faculty member Professor Peter London; fellow class of '15 grads Adam LeGuerre and Elizabeth Arencibia; and a number of NWSA undergraduates who have been in New York City dancing at various summer programs. We were so proud for their performances in this critically acclaimed event." Damion joined the Garth Fagan Dance Company this summer where he is now performing alongside fellow alum Vitolio, a dancer with the company since he graduated from NWSA. Daniel Lewis, founding dean of dance at NWSA said of Vitolio, "He has made a major mark on the dance world, with his technical skills and rare and beautiful interpretation of drama through movement.  He is a dancer extraordinaire."

An exhibition that focuses on conceptual exploration and manifestation, WARP: THE CLASS will showcase the work-in-progress of the new visual arts college class. WARP (WORKSHOP FOR ART RESEARCH AND PRACTICE) is a new method of introducing beginning visual arts college students to the richness and wonders of art and the demands of art making. This course investigates the myriad ways in which art has been made through history, and is designed to familiarize students with various artistic procedures through studio practice and historical research. An interdisciplinary class, the course is a requirement for all incoming visual arts college freshman and transfer students at New World School of the Arts and serves as an introduction to becoming an artist working today. "Focusing on four areas of inquiry: Reflection, Navigation, Creation, and Participation, WARP is a challenging as well as a uniquely satisfying course which allows students to learn though experience," explained Maggy Cuesta, dean of the visual arts at NWSA. "Our goal is to equip our students with the conceptual understanding they need to question the world in which they live, reflect on the potential of art as a change-maker and, through their own creative process, become active participants in their ever-changing world."

Actress Maria Corina Ramirez is making waves around the globe in the acting world. Among her most recent undertakings was her role in "Siempre fui una Mujer" of the TV series Escandalos filmed in L.A. and soon to air in Mexico, Venezuela, and Colombia. Corina is also also at the final stages of production of the short film El Rey Vende Flores, which she wrote and is directed by former NWSA classmate Edson Jean. "As I always say everywhere I go, I carry the things I learned at New World with me as my most precious tool box and I am forever indebted to each of you for generating the very specific, beautiful, freeing and disciplined environment at New World which nestled the beginning of my professional journey. Thank you, thank you, thank you." - Maria Corina Ramirez, BFA '10.

Jen Stark with fellow alumna Naomi Fisher during NWSA's 25th Anniversary
Jen Stark, High School '01, celebrated visual artist is also spreading her colors. Her unmistakable colorful work was featured in the cover of Cosmopolitan Magazine. The artwork, a special tear-away for the July issue, is a photo of a paper sculpture she created for "The Love Issue". Jen recently finished an artist residency at The Surf Lodge in Montauk, NY, where she created a large scale mural on the side of the building, as well as a solo show in their gallery space. Curated by the Facebook Artist in Residence Program, she also completed a mural installation in the newly constructed Facebook building (designed by Frank Gehry). It is a 40,000-square-metre office building with "the largest open floor plan in the world" located just south of San Francisco in Menlo Park. Jen's work can also be found in Miami Beach's Sagamore Hotel, Miami International Airport, The Kemper Museum in Kansas City, Gagosian Gallery Beverly Hills, San Francisco - through The Art City Project, and in many other galleries and exhibitions around the nation. "Jen is more than generous with NWSA and the visual arts division," said Maggy Cuesta, dean of visual arts. "She is always willing to participate with her time, donating her work and mentoring the students."

The New World School of the Arts Alumni Foundation has awarded the organization's first Inspiration Grant to alumnus Christopher Rudd. A 1998 graduate of the High School dance division, Rudd has performed in numerous principal and soloist roles in companies from North Carolina to New York and Montreal, He also started the dance company, RudduR Dance, and is focusing a portion of his efforts to the creation of his own original piece entitled Witness - a contemporary ballet has been inspired by the murders of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Garner & Freddie Gray. "We are honored to assist with funding to create this important and timely piece," said Elizabeth Gainer, who chaired the selection committee that chose Witness for the Inspiration Grant. "There were numerous applications from alumni spanning many years of graduating classes from New World School of the Arts high school and college. This was not an easy decision based on the level of talent in each of the worthy applicants. Christopher's piece is very current, and the committee members agreed that this is a very special project." Witness will be presented in New York City with the hopes of finding more venues to exhibit this work. The New World School of the Arts Alumni Foundation was founded in 2012. This non-profit corporation exists to provide support to the thousands of graduates from Miami's New World School of the Arts high school and college.
