NWSA PRESENTS THEATER SHOWCASE IN NEW YORK
The theater division travelled to New York city the Week of May 4th for the annual NYC showcase with 13 graduating seniors. Once again, the showcase took place at the Snapple Theater for agents, casting directors, family, friends and alumni. This year, the theater division held a special alumni event following the showcase with a talk back with alumnus and two-time Tony Award winning actress Katie Finneran and Film, Television and Broadway actress Natalie Gold.
"The workshop with Katie Finneran and Natalie Gold was another lesson in accepting that everyone's road to success is different. What truly matters is the amount of passion, determination and effort you're willing to give in order to achieve success, whatever that word may mean," said Christopher Ferrer, who graduated from the NWSA college theater program this year. "The callbacks I received from the agents were truly humbling. They left me with a wonderful impression of the professional community in NYC and gave me reassurance that even in The Big Apple, cream can rise to the top. You just have to put in the work."
The audience had the opportunity to ask questions and receive invaluable advice about the business of acting in New York City. Ms. Finneran is currently starring on Broadway with Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick and Stockard Channing in It's Only a Play and many of the students had the opportunity to see her performance.

VISUAL ARTS ALUMNA RECEIVES FULBRIGHT STUDENT RESEARCH GRANT
Luna Goldberg, New World School of the Arts 2011 visual arts alumna was recently granted a Fulbright Student Research Grant to Israel. For her project, Luna will be conducting research on the effects of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the work of contemporary visual artists in the region and their ability to offer insight on the social value of art. Through studio visits and interviews with artists and museum professionals, she will examine how contemporary Israeli art is influenced by the sociopolitical issues that pervade the Middle East as well as whether the arts can be used as a tool to mobilize individuals and promote mutual understanding among people.
"I graduated from New World's visual arts division in 2011 and have since taken an interest in another facet of the art world: that of museums, education and curatorial practice," explained Goldberg. "The work ethic and the quality of the education students receive at New World is unlike any other. It prepares students for college and gives them the necessary skills to succeed no matter where their paths lead. The attention, time, and energy that faculty members give to students make them feel the weight and importance of the work they are producing. The friendships, connections and mentors I made at New World School of the Arts will last a lifetime."
Luna Goldberg received her B.A. from Hampshire College, with a concentration in visual arts, social psychology and museum studies. Through her coursework, she has studied the politics of museum spaces and the ways in which identity and culture are represented in arts institutions. Luna has worked at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, the Norton Museum of Art and the Museum at Eldridge Street. Her senior thesis focuses on New York's Lower East Side and the way in which its history has been rewritten over time to meet the needs of those in the local community. She is the recipient of a Humanity in Action Fellowship to Amsterdam this summer, a transatlantic study program focusing on human rights and minority issues, which seeks to highlight different models of action to remedy injustice relating to diverse societies.
