ANTUNES & O'RILEY, OUTSTANDING MUSIC OFFERINGS
The month begins with a well-anticipated clarinet masterclass for NWSA music students. Having a recognized versatility in several different musical styles, Nuno Antunes has performed extensively as a recitalist, chamber musician and in various professional orchestras, both in the U.S. and Europe. He participated in Clarmeetoporto-International Clarinet Meeting of Oporto, Portugal, and performed Darin Lewis' Concertino for Clarinet and Strings with the Orchestra Simpatico in NYC. Antunes had his NYC debut as a soloist in 2007, performing Mozart's Clarinet Concerto at Musica Bella Concert Series. His love for chamber music led to the creation of The Gene Project, a unique combination of clarinet, bassoon and harp. He is also a member of Ensemble 54, and collaborates regularly with several other chamber music groups. He was also invited to give a recital at the XX International Clarinet Meeting (Lisbon, Portugal). Antunes is the guest principal clarinetist of the Miami Symphony Orchestra and a member of IRIS Orchestra. His appearance in competitions has resulted in several prizes, including the R.D.P. Young Musicians Prize and the Portuguese Young Clarinetist Competition. Nuno Antunes began his musical studies at the C.N.R. of Leiria. Nuno Antunes continued his education at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra and later earned the Masters of Music diploma at Manhattan School of Music.
Acclaimed for his engaging and deeply committed performances, the pianist Christopher O'Riley is known to millions as the host of NPR's From the Top. Now in his fifteenth year on air, O'Riley introduces the next generation of classical-music stars to almost a million listeners each week. He performs around the world and has garnered widespread praise for his untiring efforts to reach new audiences. Christopher O'Riley has performed as a soloist with virtually all of the major American orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, National Symphony, and San Francisco Symphony. In addition, he has performed recitals throughout North America, Europe, and Australia. Living by the Duke Ellington adage "There are only two kinds of music, good music and bad," O'Riley - a proponent of the former in all of its guises - has received the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant and an equally coveted four-star review from Rolling Stone magazine. O'Riley strives to introduce new audiences to classical music with an almost missionary zeal by performing piano arrangements of music by Radiohead, Elliott Smith, Pink Floyd, and Nirvana alongside traditional classical repertoire. He has collaborated for many years with the flutist Sir James Galway and cellists Matt Haimovitz and Carter Brey.
"Christopher O'Riley is an important figure to the music scene throughout the nation. The masterclass Mr. O'Riley will be presenting will undoubtedly be an eye-opening and unique experience for all in attendance," said Dr. Daniel Andai, NWSA Dean of Music

COMPOSER DAVID MASLANKA'S WORK EXPLAINED
Composer David Maslanka offered a dynamic experience for NWSA music students as he described his own creative process for his work. "Maslanka is a prolific composer and his visit to the NWSA couldn't be more timely. The NWSA Wind Ensemble is currently working on Maslanka's Symphony No. 1 and what an experience it was for the students to receive notes and comments first hand from the composer himself," explained Daniel Andai, NWSA Dean of Music. "Music students majoring in Composition were also in attendance and benefited greatly from the interaction between the composer and his interpreters, the performers." The collaboration between the composer and NWSA students took place last week in the music building, on the Wolfson Campus of the Miami Dade College.
David Maslanka was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1943. He attended the Oberlin College Conservatory where he studied composition with Joseph Wood. He spent a year at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, and did masters and doctoral study in composition at Michigan State University where his principal teacher was H. Owen Reed. Maslanka's music for winds has become especially well known. Among his more than 130 works are forty pieces for wind ensemble, including seven symphonies, fifteen concertos, a Mass, and many concert pieces.

 PULITZER-PRIZE WINNING PLAY ON STAGE
New World School of the Arts high school theater program concludes the academic year with Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth. Directed by Stuart Meltzer, NWSA alumnus, theater faculty and Artistic Director of Zoetic Stage, the play takes the young high school acting students through a compressed journey from the beginning of time, that addresses universal questions and issues with universal answers."Outside the style and its wild and whimsical theatricality, Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize-winning play explores themes that are frighteningly omnipresent today - and that in itself is one of the essential and crucial themes of the play," explained Meltzer.
Mankind's knack for repeating history and never quite learning in the main focus of The Skin of Our Teeth. But, the other component of this theme is mankind's talent to start over. Wilder wrote The Skin of Our Teeth in 1942 and it premiered on Broadway 13 months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It is not hard to see that that this play is a comment and reaction to war and the absurdities that wartime brings. Global war and the holocaust put into perspective the essential precariousness of human life.
