Rising Stars Showcase, a professionally staged, energy packed, one-of-a-kind performance, presents the extraordinary talent of high school and college students from New World School of the Arts, Florida's premier arts institution. The showcase begins at the New World Gallery with a juried visual arts exhibition featuring impressive student artworks. The show, as diverse as the school population, includes painting, drawing, design, sculpture, digital media and installations.

The evening continues just a few blocks away at the historic Gusman Center for the Performing Arts with a VIP Reception to welcome guests to this artistic landmark. Following the reception, the performance showcases excerpts from works performed by the high school and the college students during the school year.

Among the works to be presented is A Weekend in the Country from the Tony Award winning musical A Little Night Music, Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. The Theater division will also delight the audience with Tradition, from the Tony Award winning musical Fiddler on the Roof, Book by Joseph Stein and Music by Jerry Block. Led by maestro Alfred Gershfeld, the NWSA Symphony Orchestra will present a symphonic favorite in Shostakovich's Festival Overture, while the famed NWSA Jazz Band, under the direction of Jim Gasior, will dazzle the crowd once again with a tribute to Artie Shaw. Asuka, choreographed for the New York City-based company Ballet Hispanico, will highlightthe NWSA college dancers. This particular work is homage to salsa legend Celia Cruz, set to her music and interlaced with other references to Vilaro's native Cuba. The high school dancers will present Earth a stirring work by NWSA alumnus Uri Sands. The piece "teeters on the edge of overwhelming in its pounding percussion and violent movements... conveying a daunting danger that left me breathless and audience on its feet" (Ron Hubbard, TwinCities.com).

LO SPEZIALE [THE APOTHECARY]

New World School of the Arts Opera Theatre Ensemble production of Lo Speziale (The Apothecary) by Joseph Haydn, will be presented this weekend at the Miami Dade College North Campus. Returning as director this year is Jeffrey Buchman, well known in Miami for his work with Florida Grand Opera. For this production, director Buchman has updated the setting to the boardwalk of Venice Beach, California, where all manner of interesting things can happen. The fully staged opera is accompanied by the NWSA Symphony Orchestra under the baton of maestro Alfred Gershfeld.

A love triangle between the rich old man (Sempronio), the witty and suave (Volpino) and the poor and honest young apprentice (Mengone), with the beautiful young ward (Grilletta) at the heart of their discord, Lo Espeziale is a warm comedy that explores how suitors push the envelope in order to win their darling. Lies, deception, jealousy and courage seamlessly intertwine as the three suitors claim their love for Grilletta; however as the plot unravels and the truth unfolds, it is apparent that only one man stands a chance to win the heart and hand of the young beloved.

New World School of the Arts Jazz Ensemble once more placed among the 15 American high school band finalists that will compete in the prestigious Essentially Ellington (EE) High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival in May 2015. Of the 96 high school jazz bands across the country that entered the competition, three of the 15 finalists, including NWSA, are from South Florida. The participating schools submitted recordings of three songs selected from Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington library. Throughout March and April, Jazz at Lincoln Center will send, free of charge, a professional jazz musician to each of the 15 finalist band schools to lead an intensive day-long workshop of rehearsals, lessons, and master classes. The free clinics are part of the rich 20-year history of this unique music education program, which has reached thousands of high school students across all 50 United States, Canada, and in American schools abroad.

Led by NWSA professor of Jazz Studies, Jim Gasior, the New World School of the Arts Jazz Ensemble will compete in the prestigious Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival at Frederick P. Rose Hall on May 9, 2015.
