Make Art Work [MAW] continues its dialogue series with the distinguished violinist Glenn Dicterow, former concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic. The illustrious musician will follow the conversation, directed at the music students of New World School of the Arts, with a Master Class. A Q&A session will follow the presentation.

The following day, on Wednesday, February 11, Glenn Dicterow will share the stage with the NWSA Symphony Orchestra during the school's much-anticipated annual symphony concert. The Orchestra, under the baton of Alfred Gershfeld, will present Rienzi Overture by Richard Wagner and Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5, while Glenn Dicterow will perform Samuel Barber's beloved Violin Concerto commissioned in 1939 for a fellow Curtis graduate.

Glenn Dicterow has established himself worldwide as one of the most prominent American concert artists of his generation. Having appeared as soloist with orchestras, recitalist and chamber musician from coast to coast, he retired as concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic at the end of the 2014 season having held that title for 34 years. He is the longest serving concertmaster in the orchestra's history. Dicterow has performed with numerous orchestra worldwide, is a winner of top international competitions, and can be heard in the violin solos of the film scores for The Turning Point, The Untouchables, Altered States, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and Interview with the Vampire, among others. He serves on the faculty of The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music, the Music Academy of the West, and became the first to hold the Robert Mann Chair in Strings and Chamber Music at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music.

Like us on Facebook A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC SMILES UPON MIAMI BEACH

The annual NWSA college musical graces Miami Beach with A Little Night Music, an adaptation by Stephen Sondheim, based on the book by Hugh Wheeler. Directed by NWSA dean of theater, Patrice Bailey, the production highlights the talents of music theater college juniors and seniors, supported by an 18-member NWSA Symphony Orchestra, led by Alfred Gershfeld.

In 1957, Harold Prince and Stephen Sondheim came up the idea of collaborating on a musical with a score made up entirely of waltzes. However, it wasn't' until 1971 that Sondheim remembered a charming 1956 Ingmar Bergman film, Smiles of a Summer Night about the foibles of lovers on Swedish midsummer night that fit the idea of their collaboration. Prince and Sondheim were able to secure the rights to the screenplay and work with Hugh Wheeler on a script adaptation, which stayed true to the spirit of the film. Thus, A Little Night Music was born. A Little Night Music is a romantic musical set at the turn of the century Sweden. It follows the frolics of misguided couples blinded by their own sexual desires and caught up in the chase, the game, the fear of lost youth, as well as the realization of one last opportunity for love. A Little Night Music is considered by many theater critics to have been turning point in Stephen Sondheim's work. For the first time, his musical style took on a more "operatic" nature which continued in such works as Sweeny Todd and Into the Woods, featuring extended solos, duets and ensemble pieces.

As one of the most anticipated performance of the college, the NWSA College BFA Dance Concert will present 20 Hues of 15, a program that showcases the dancers' various talents, creativity, training and passion. This diverse group of 20 dancers, - BFA candidates from the class of 2015, has produced a mosaic of choreography and film with each dance, unique in its own way, yet fitted together as an entire picture.

Among the choreography to be presented is At the Midnight Hour, by Angela Fegers, was inspired by eleutheromania - the intense and irresistible desire for freedom. It is a dance-theater piece that utilizes live-music and surprising scenic elements to create an eerie and intriguing world. 紀念, 哥!, a work choreographed by Angie Lu, a native of Taiwan, is the  story of a departed, beloved sibling.  紀念, 哥! is dedicated to her late brother, Hanki Lu and is a duet for Ms. Lu and Adam LeGuerre. Bowser's Demise by Jovahnie Funderburk, offers a fun, comedic and exciting choreography inspired by everyone's favorite video game: Super Mario. Through props, costumes, choreography and casting, Jovahnie successfully pulls the audience into the world of Super Mario. Like us on Facebook THE NWSA ALUMNI FOUNDATION ACCOMPLISHED BIG THINGS IN 2014

The NWSA Alumni Foundation is a relatively new organization, but it already has some notable accomplishments under its belt, to benefit all NWSA alums. Over the course of 2014, the Foundation launched its website www.NWSAAlumni.net, filled with tools to help alumni connect and collaborate. It also launched its first grant, the annual Inspiration Grant - a $1,000 grant to help support alumni creative projects and business ventures. It also held its first Miami all-alumni gathering.

The biggest news, though, was the spectacular success of The Emmett Challenge. Hollywood film producer Randall Emmett (NWSA HS Theatre '89) challenged the Foundation to raise $10,000, which he matched at the close of 2014 for a total of $21,000 raised. These funds will allow the NWSA Foundation to offer alumni networking events in cities like Miami, NY and L.A.; provide grant opportunities to help fund alumni creative and business pursuits; track down "missing" alums to help ensure that all alums - high school and college alike - are connected; upgrade the Foundation website and provide more online tools for alumni collaboration, and more ways to become aware of what your fellow alums are up to and much more.

The NWSA Alumni Foundation is a 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to supporting the creative and business pursuits of NWSA alumni, by providing funds to worthwhile alumni projects, but also by creating mentoring, networking and internship opportunities for NWSA alums in their chosen fields. All NWSA alumni are encouraged to jump in and help the Foundation achieve its goals. To get involved, email oconnell.p@ewm.com.
