UNEXPECTED
The NWSA Visual Arts division launches its season with UNEXPECTED, a college student exhibition emphasizing the various arts disciplines, including painting, digital media, sculpture, photography and graphic design. "The show is a total surprise for the faculty as well as for the students. Not even the participants know exactly what the whole show will ultimately look like," explained Maggy Cuesta, NWSA dean of visual arts. The project, which was assigned at the beginning of the school year, charged the students with the task of creating a work that reflected their artistic path. The opening tomorrow, of UNEXPECTED, coincides with the 3rd annual Art Days weekend that takes place in downtown Miami from September 19 - September 21.
"It's a continuation of the work they have presented or even mastered thus far in their field of art. Each student has been given a full wall in the Gallery and full range to create and display their work. Although I have an idea of where they're going with it, the big unveil will take place on opening night."September 19 - October 12
Opening Reception: September 19; 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM
New World Gallery
25 NE 2 Street, downtown Miami

PROFESSOR MARIA MARTINEZ-CAŅAS RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS CIVITELLA RANIERI FELLOWSHIP
NWSA photography professor Maria Martinez-Caņas was one of 13 fellows and one Director's Guest at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Umbria, Italy. Nominated by a Museum curator, Martinez-Caņas was offered the opportunity to live and create work during six weeks in a 15th century castle located in rural Umbria, as well as round-trip travel, room, board and studio space.
"During my Fellowship, I created a collaborative project between the other 13 Civitella Fellows, three staff members and myself," explained Martinez-Caņas, "This is the beginning of what I hope will become a limited edition portfolio. I also photographed around 4,200 images of what I call 'sources' for another limited edition portfolio of 'straight/manipulated' work. In addition, I had uninterrupted time to learn a new photographic software that I had acquired two days before the trip, which has allowed me to work the images more precisely and in detail."
The Civitella Ranieri Fellowships are awarded through a careful nomination and jury process by a rotating group of distinguished artists, academics, and critics that ensures access to a highly diverse group of emerging and accomplished candidates from around the world. Only nominated candidates may apply and a review jury makes selections.

RECOGNIZED CHOREOGRAPHER CHUCK MALDONADO TEACHES MASTER CLASS AT NWSA
More than sixty dancers from the college program at NWSA filled Studio A with high energy moves as they followed the lead of award-winning Los Angeles-based choreographer Chuck Maldonado. Maldonado led a vibrant and challenging 90-minute hip-hop class, which culminated in groups of dancers performing combinations of quicksilver, fast-paced movements for each other and cheering on their fellow dancers.
"During my many years in Los Angeles I've worked with so many students who've attended New World School of the Arts. They have always excelled, so I've wanted to have the opportunity to visit and meet the students," said Maldonado. "I enjoy teaching these talented students because I feel that it's our God-given responsibility to share our gift and pay it forward."
An award-winning choreographer for his work with Stomp the Yard and Chris Brown's Grammy performance, Mr. Maldonado has appeared as a dancer in films such as Dreamgirls and Indiana Jones 4.

NWSA STUDENTS, AMONG FEW SELECTED, TO "PITCH" ANIMATION PROJECT
NWSA Art + Technology college students Tianna Harvey and Jackie Albano are among the eight finalists who will have the opportunity to "pitch" their animation idea during the 2014 Animation Conference and Festival, taking place at Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus next month. Creating their pitch for a TV series called "The Failures," the team was selected from hundreds of student and professional submissions from all over the world. "We have wanted to do this for awhile now," said Jackie - "We're thrilled to be included in the top 8 finalists and now we're focusing on perfecting our pitch for October." As finalists, Albano and Tianna's animation project will be reviewed by recognized studios and agencies including Walt Disney Television Animation, Cartoon Network, Microsoft Studios and The Third Floor, and the winner will receive an award and recognition at the MIA Animation Festival screening. In addition, the top pitch overall will be set up with three meetings with relevant buyers and/or talent representatives, providing a great start to getting their pitch sold.
The 4th annual MIA Animation Conference and Festival, is the brain-child of founder and President, Mauricio Ferrazza. The daylong conference offers many exciting educational opportunities that are free for MDC/ NWSA students and faculty. The program includes Master Classes highlighting the latest in software for animation, a line-up of world renowned industry professionals on animation, film and television, an animation networking festival and after party, booths highlighting the most current software companies, studios, and schools offering specialist degrees in these emerging fields.
"I was impressed by Mauricio's passion and dedication to bring such a comprehensive conference to Miami," stated Alisa Pitchenik Charles, faculty member teaching students in the Art +Technology BFA emphasis at NWSA. "For the conference to be right in our Miami Dade College backyard is an invaluable educational experience for our students, faculty, and community." All MDC and NWSA Students and Faculty may register for the Festival free of charge.
