BFAs DISCOVER THE MARVELS OF PARIS, FRANCE Written by Jose Garcia, NWSA Visual Arts BFA 2014, College Class Valedictorian
Looking back on Paris, I can only think of how splendid the experience was. Paris has a historic presence from every angle of the city. With museums housed in opulent palaces and lush gardens located in the middle of chaotic urban life, Paris did not have a corner that did not have a rich history attached to it. Monuments, like the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Trompe, adorn the city and appear right as one dissolves into the cityscape. Notre Dame, Sainte Chapelle, La Madeine, Basilica of the Scare Coeur, and the Cathedral of Chartes are churches and cathedrals that all resonant with you regardless of your religious position.
Opulence is taken into a whole other form at Versailles. Versailles at times felt comical with its over the top grandeur and its gold-leafed gates and outrageous paintings in every inch of the wall, not to mention the hall of mirrors. As you would leave one room, the other would leave you just as astonished as the next. The skill and dedication used to create these cathedrals, churches, and chateaus are astonishing. Similar to the city themselves, these monuments have no corner that hasn't be skillfully and artfully rendered. The artful detailing illustrated, so beautifully, throughout Paris is only a foreshadowing of the exhibitions this marvelous city has to offer.
The prospect of seeing art in Paris was unbelievable.... More on Jose's blog post

NWSA DANCES WITH CUNNINGHAM
Two NWSA College rising Seniors, Katelynn Draper and Christine Flores, were awarded full scholarships to participate in a three-week Cunningham Repertory Workshop this summer at the Cunningham Studio in the New York City Center building in Manhattan, as a result of Patricia Lent's work here at NWSA teaching master classes and repertory. The final performance, held on Friday, June 6th, was live-streamed on the Internet.
"I was very fortunate to participate in the Cunningham workshop this summer, led by Patricia Lent and Jamie Scott. Getting the chance to learn Roaratorio by Merce Cunningham was a fun and thrilling challenge for both, mind and body. In the short three weeks, I was able to receive huge amounts of information from Patricia and Jamie who have performed the work. They told our cast stories of their own experiences working with Merce, and allowed us to put a bit of our own flair into the work to make it our own. It was truly an amazing experience and I hope to take part in another workshop in the future." - Christine Flores

SPIKE ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP TAKES ALUM TO ADF
Rivkins Christopher, who graduated from NWSA's Dance Division this year with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, received the Spike annual scholarship to attend the world-renowned American Dance Festival (ADF) summer dance program in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. Spike, created by NWSA alumna Rosie Herrera and a colleague, Matthew Ferrara, is awarded based on an application, audition, and interview, and provides one NWSA student with the opportunity to attend this outstanding, international summer festival free of charge. The American Dance Festival, called "the world's greatest dance festival" by the New York Post, is now in its 80th year. Herrera, who had the opportunity to study at ADF, has provided a means for this eye-opening educational experience to be available to other New World School of the Arts students.
"ADF is such a remarkable experience, I am currently learning a Bill T Jones/Arnie Zane Rep entitled "Story Time" under the direction of Jen Nugent and also learning William Forsythe Repertory under the direction of Elizabeth Corbett. I am so honored and appreciative of this life-changing artistic voyage." - Rivkins Christopher

THE VIRGIN QUEEN ONCE MORE
The Martha Graham II Dance Company in New York City recently performed a work created originally on dancers at the New World School of the Arts by guest artist Darshan Singh Bhuller entitled The Virgin Queen. Re-creating her role in that work was NWSA college dance graduate, Stephanie Fuentes ('13) who has been a member of Graham II for the past year. Stephanie said that she felt fortunate to have the opportunity to re-create this part and perform it in another context, saying: "Darshan Singh Bhuller is one my favorite choreographers," and noting her admiration for his ability to support dancers as they explore roles in differing circumstances, since, "as artists, we are constantly looking for growth and it's difficult to be satisfied."

THEATER SENIOR RECEIVES NINE LIVES SCHOLARSHIP
Cheyenne Nicole Hardy, a NWSA high school senior was awarded with the Mad Cat Theatre Company's third annual Nine Lives Scholarship Awards. She will receive a $1,000 scholarship and an engraved crystal award, which will be presented during the opening night of Mad Cat's summer production at the SandBox at the Miami Theater Center on August 16, 2014. The Mad Cat Theater Company's 9 Lives Scholarship Awards was founded by Artistic Director Paul Tei and Ann Kelly Anthony, Executive Director, to offer South Florida students an opportunity to continue advancing their art through theater education and performance.
"Cheyenne is so deserving of this scholarship award from Mad Cat Theater and I am delighted that she has been recognized for her work in theater. This year she was also the recipient of the NWSA Theater Dean's Award for her outstanding contributions to the department. She has been an incredible role model to the younger students at New World School of the Arts, and has demonstrated an incredible mature and professional work ethic. Cheyenne is strongly committed to her work as a young artist, who never wasted a minute of her four years at the school. She was always seeking ways to perform and to hone her craft and to get better. As a result, she took advantage of everything that the division offered and more, she performed in Thespians, Studio Productions and on the Mainstage. With each performance she became better and better. What a thrill it has been to watch her incredible growth!" - Patrice Bailey, Dean of Theater, NWSA
