One of fifteen distinguished students from Miami to become a recipient of The Miami Herald / El Nuevo Herald Silver Knight Awards, Kaley Schwartz is the eighth student from New World School of the Arts (NWSA) high school to receive the prestigious silver statue. Selected from the Art category nominations, Kaley's project entailed drawing portraits of children in the Cardiac Unit of Miami Children's Hospital and donating them to their parents. "By capturing the innocence and beauty of a child in a portrait without the heartache of medical tubes and wires, I feel I am giving the families hope and peace," said Schwartz.

This is the eighth Silver Knight Award presented to NWSA students, and the fourth in the Art category. The other awards were presented in the areas of Drama, Science and Music. According to the Silver Knight Awards Info Brochure, to be nominated in the Art category, the "Service can be provided through creative ability in drawing, painting, sculpture, fabrics, photography, graphic design or any other medium in the visual arts. Service includes the teaching, inspiration or encouragement of others through the use of visual arts."

Two students from the NWSA high school music division are among the teenage musicians who will soon tour the United States, from coast to coast, playing with the prestigious National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA). Selected from approximately 1000 applicants from across the nation, Athalie Claude-Lilia Vaval (viola) and Jason Arevalo (violin) will join 118 of the finest US music students in the nation, as they embark in the program's 2014 Summer Tour, led by conductor David Robertson and accompanied by renowned violinist Gil Shaham.

Selected from a pool of exceptional young musicians from 35 US states, Vaval and Arevalo underwent a comprehensive audition process that secured their coveted spot in the orchestra, promising a life-changing musical and cultural experience. "I am inspired by the effect that music has - music is universal," said Jason. "I feel as if music is my primary language; finding that there are things which I can only express through music."

The Great God Pan, presented by Zoetic Stage and the Adrienne Arsht Center highlights the talent of alumni and faculty members from NWSA. A critically-acclaimed drama by 2012 Obie Award-winning playwright Amy Herzog (4,000 Miles, After the Revolution, Belleville), The Great God Pan closes both Zoetic Stage's award-winning season and the Arsht Center's praised 2013-2014 Theater Up Close series which features artistic collaborations from stellar local theater ensembles and nationally acclaimed theater companies.

"It is June, and nearing the end of my 25th year teaching at New World School of the Arts is being crowned with my participation in the Zoetic Stage's production of The Great God Pan by Amy Herzog," said David Kwiat, who teaches acting at NWSA.

Having trained many local and national up-and-coming as well as well established actors, including some who will be sharing the stage with him during this production, David comments, "I wish I could take credit for Stuart's (Stuart Meltzer is Zoetic Stage's Artistic Director, and Silver Palm Award winning NWSA college alum '97) imaginative as well as his sturdy underpinning of the production, for Aubrey Kessler (college alum '00) and Matt Stabile (high school alum '96), haunting performances - but I can't. All I can do is watch all their work with pride and feel grateful to have been part of their journey as formative artists - and now having the pleasure of working with them as colleagues."

In addition, Aaron Merritt, who is a professor in the NWSA Music Division, will be playing cello for the play.

Ballet Hispanico, the nation's leading Latino dance organization since 1970, will make its Miami debut under the artistic direction of Eduardo Vilaro this weekend. A dancer and choreographer since childhood, Vilaro's history with Ballet Hispanico spans for more than two decades. During a recent NWSA Make Art Work lecture, Vilaro noted that Ballet Hispanico was his sanctuary for ten years - there he thrived, loving the work and learning a great deal about the wider world of Hispanic dance and dancers. Following his tenure as a dancer, Vilaro moved to Chicago where he completed a Master's degree in Interdisciplinary Arts and Pedagogy, and created his own dance company, Luna Negra, which he ran for ten years.

It was after that experience that he was recruited to return to Ballet Hispanico as its second Artistic Director, the post he currently holds. This "identity journey" also influenced who he became as Artistic Director of Ballet Hispanico. "I have needed to reconnect to where I came from, particularly because I came from a place to which I cannot not return," said the Cuban-American choreographer.

Eduardo Vilaro will receive a heartfelt welcome from the New World School of the Arts family during a private reception to be held in downtown Miami tomorrow. NWSA alumna and Princess Grace Award recipient, Rosie Herrera, will also be recognized for her stellar accomplishments as a choreographer as will be the 14-member ensemble.

"We are thrilled to see the world premiere of Show Girl by Rosie," said Mary Lisa Burns, Dean of Dance at NWSA - "It brings her unique vision to the dynamic Ballet Hispanico Dance Company. Under the Direction of Eduardo Vilaro, Ballet Hispanico truly stands out among contemporary dance companies and we're delighted that three of our distinguished NWSA alumni - Melissa Fernandez, Johan Rivera, and Joshua Peter Winzeler are dancing in this program. New World School of the Arts takes great pride in having nurtured and trained these young artists at the outset of their careers and we hope that Miami will join us in welcoming them back to Miami!"

Peter London, NWSA dance teacher and internationally-known dancer and choreographer will present Heatwave featuring five world premieres including some by New World School of the Arts dance alumni. Andrea Murillo, whose tutelage under London began in 2002 during her tenure as a high school student at the New World School of the Arts, said she's returning to Miami with a "different voice. The last time I choreographed a work in my hometown I was a student so this is very special."

Founded in 2010, Peter London Global Dance Company is the result of a Knight Foundation Knights Art Challenge Award, which, according to London, provides local dancers and choreographers with opportunities to display their talents. "Our dancers serve as great examples to our community's youth through their exemplary work ethic of discipline and unflinching commitment to the achievement of excellence. We're proud to share the world premieres of four local dance stars who have worked professionally around the world and one that I created for this concert."
