FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
NWSA celebrates Valentine's Day with a special presentation by piano virtuoso, Viviana Lasaracina, who joins the NWSA music division in the conservatory's annual concert at Knight Concert Hall. Coinciding this year with the Sochi Winter Olympic Games and Valentine's Day, From Russia with Love highlights masterpieces from three Russian musical giants: Stravinsky, Rachmaninov, and Shostakovich.

This year's program opens with conductor Albert Clark as he leads the New World School of the Arts Chamber Orchestra, Opera Chorus, and Concert Choir in Igor Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, a choral fantasy originally commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky for the Boston Symphony Orchestra's 50th anniversary.

The NWSA Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of maestro Alfred Gershfeld, continues the evening accompanied by Lasaracina - making her American debut on piano - to interpret Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, opus 43, by Sergei Rachmaninov. The program concludes with The NWSA Symphony Orchestra performing Dimitri Shostakovich's Symphony Number 1 in F minor, written in 1924, when the composer was just a teenager.

Like us on Facebook DIVERSUALITY BFA DANCE CONCERT

As one of the most anticipated performances of the college year, the NWSA College BFA Dance Concert marks the most comprehensive and final project delivered by NWSA's dance graduates. Led by NWSA dance faculty member, Dale Andree, and Mary Lisa Burns, dean of the dance division, this year's concert consists of dances choreographed and performed by the 2014 graduating class. Inspired by the idea of Aristotle's that "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts" each of the young dancers is able to externalize and share that concept through their choreography.

"This year's BFA concert presents a new generation of dancer/choreographers exploring the theme of diverse individuals who come together to create something new that lives and breathes on its own. The dances on the evening's program reveal a wide range of choreographic styles as each choreographer explores these themes of individuality and community. The program shows the range and versatility of these exceptional young performers, who share their passion for dance in a program that will both engage and inspire."- Mary Lisa Burns, NWSA dean of dance.

The NWSA college music theater program presents the popular musical Into the Woods, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. Under the direction of James Randolph, this modern twist on Grimm's fairy tales follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel and other magical characters who come to the realization that what you want is necessarily what you need

"It is the story of all these fairy tale characters after they live happily ever after," said Randolph. "It's great material - wonderful characters and a great deal of texture that the students can learn how to play. Plus, it is one of the most done musicals in America. If we want to train our students to be able to be competitive I think it's a really great opportunity."

Into the Woods debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway on November 5, 1987. It won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical.  Into The Woods has been produced many times, with a 1988 US national tour, a 1990 West End production, a 1991 television production, a 1997 tenth anniversary concert, a 2002 Broadway revival, a 2010 London revival and in 2012 as part of New York City's outdoor Shakespeare in the Park series.

Rising Stars Showcase, a professionally staged, energy-packed, one-of-a-kind performance, presents the extraordinary talent of high school and college students from New World School of the Arts, Florida's premier arts institution.

The showcase begins at the New World Gallery with a juried visual arts exhibition featuring extraordinary student artworks. The show, as diverse as the school population, includes painting, drawing, design, sculpture, digital media and installations.

The evening continues just a few blocks away at the historic Olympia Theater - Gusman Center for the Performing Arts with a pre-performance VIP Reception to welcome guests to this artistic landmark. Following the reception, the performance showcases excerpts from works performed by the high school and the college students during the school year. Among the works to be presented is Once on this Island - a Caribbean-flavored award winning musical that combines the magic of love stories and the art of storytelling. The college actors will offer a sinister twist on the traditional fairy tales as they perform the ever-popular Tony Award winning musical Into the Woods. The melodies of Frank Ticheli will take over the Gusman as the NWSA Concert Band interprets Wild Nights under the direction of Brent Mounger, and led by maestro Alfred Gershfeld, the Symphony Orchestra will present Symphony Number 1 in F minor by Dimitri Shostakovich among other timeless compositions. Forced Entry, a rhythmically-intense choreography by former NWSA Faculty member Josée Garant, will bring forth the talent of the younger NWSA dancers. And among other moving choreography, the college dancers will present 1914, a powerful world-premiere in observance of the 100th anniversary of World War I, by renowned choreographer Darshan S. Bhuller.

BALLET HISPANICO'S EDUARDO VILARO

He began with an ice-breaker which would, at the end of the lecture, summarize his message - "you make your own path, you make your own experience - don't wait for anyone to give it you." This was Eduardo Vilaro's message in NWSA Dance Studio B - an energy-packed space filled with college dancers who will soon go into what they like to call "the real world."

Guest lecturer of the New World School of the Arts' Make Art Work Series [MAW], Eduardo Vilaro, Artistic Director of Ballet Hispanico, began with his story - the story of a Cuban emigrant who left his country at the young age of six to face his own struggles. "Those beginnings make you who you are," he stressed "not only as a dancer, but as an artist."

More about Vilaro's MAW lecture

In its fifth year, Make Art Work is designed to bring professionals in the art world together with students and the community for a dialogue on the business of art. The series will focus on providing tools, guidance and strategies for success to the next generation of artists and will expand understanding of what it takes to live as an artist in the twenty-first century. Each talk includes a question and answer session, allowing students and the public opportunities for direct communication with leaders in the art world.
