MORE ACCOMPLISHED YOUNGARTS FROM NWSA
With more than 235 YoungArts awards under its belt since doors opened in 1987, New World School of the Arts is proud to recognize the newest wave of YoungArts winners comprised of nine Finalists, three Honorable Mentions and five Merit Awards. Finalists: Gabriela Diaz, Joshua Forges, Darcy Hernandez, Amy Hixson, Michaela Manzieri, Melanie Ramos, Mika Rosenberg, Sebastian Ruiz, Gena Sims. Honorable Mention: Maya Hunter, Ana Remis, Emma Suman. Merit: Josh Bermudez, Jennie Coutrier, Jessica Fernandez, Jennifer Nouel, Melanie Ramos.
Partaking in the intensive, just blocks away from NWSA, the Finalists had the opportunity to work with professional artists who not only offered invaluable artistic direction, but also encouraged the young artists to explore their inner selves and take risks with their work. "Being a YoungArts Finalist has been such an honor. Before I got the news, I had been experiencing a lot of self-doubt as an artist. YoungArts gave me the wakeup call I needed," said Gena Sims, a music theater major who most recently appeared as Mama in Once on this Island. Sims, who has been acting since the age of eleven, plans to continue to hone her craft - she adds "I believe the best art is universal in its ability to connect, inspire, and move. I want to make art that brings audiences of all different backgrounds to the theater and connect them deeply to the performance." Accepted into Harvard, Joshua Forges never imagined his art would earn him a place among these distinguished young artists - "I almost didn't believe it because I had seen art as a side "distraction" from my intense love for academia, not as a plausible tool for my own creative development. Being a YoungArts finalist not only validated that years of figure drawing, painting, and sculpture classes had paid off but also introduced me to an entire community of other artists just like me." Although Joshua highlights his interest in academia, he believes that there is a way to forge them for the greater good and adds, "I hope to use art as a communicative and versatile means to teach others about the beauty and emotional freedom that art offers as well as contribute to the science community by developing creative solutions to technical science problems. Since I am currently interested in neuroscience and chemistry, art can help me to develop and design new tools to enhance neurological brain function or even develop new ways of teaching or learning using visual communication." Gabriela Diaz, a dancer who has participated in various NWSA concerts performing works such as Adorations by Martha Graham, under the direction of Peter London, was mentored by Katherine Kramer during YoungArts Week. "The exposure to the wonderful teachers and mentors was a great way to establish connections in the dance world outside of the Miami community. This experience gave me the confidence to leave Miami and start a professional dance career." Gabriela plans to pursue dance and kinesiology in California and eventually join an agency to begin auditioning for commercial dance work. Jordan Levin, arts editor for The Miami Herald, spent some time with the finalists during YoungArts Week - Melanie Ramos, also a dancer from NWSA, had the opportunity to share her YoungArts experience and how the intensive experience as well as the recognition changed her life. Here's Melanie's story.

THERE'S A POSSE IN THE HOUSE!
NWSA now boasts with another distinguished Posse Foundation Scholar. High School visual artist Sophia Zavarse has become the 2013 Posse Foundation Scholar and starting this fall she will be attending her dream school, Mount Holyoke, on a full scholarship offered by the nationally recognized program. Austin Wadle, a music major was a Posse finalist.
Selected from among 1000 applicants, Zavarse aptly demonstrated that her leadership abilities, collaborative nature and communication skills were just as important as her impeccable artistic talent. "Art has been a major factor in the continuous development of my interpersonal and communication skills." These important qualities and skills were instrumental to secure her place among the 40 fortunate scholarship winners. "Being a Posse Scholar will have an enormous impact on my future. The Posse Foundation gave me the opportunity to be seen as more than just a score or a GPA, as a person with depth and weaknesses as well as strengths and personal experiences that ties them all together."

"Crossingover" by Zavarse

Sophia has been developing conceptually and artistically during the past three years, but has decided to put less emphasis on her art and concentrate on pursuing a career in the subject that she is passionate about - environmental science. "Although my main focus in college will be environmental studies, I do not wish to ignore all the good that my art education has provided me. Art has enabled me to develop into the person that I am today."
In sophomore year Sophia earned community service hours as an assistant to an immigration and family attorney, doing secretarial work as well as the occasional translation of legal documents from Spanish to English. At the same time, she applied to an international summer program through Women of Tomorrow and was rewarded a $3,500 scholarship to go to Mexico for three weeks during the summer. During the summer between her junior and senior year, Sophia traveled to New Hampshire for three weeks to volunteer with the Appalachian Mountain Club to repair and maintain the trails of the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and later did two more weeks of volunteer work on Mount Cardigan. Sophia is a member of the National Science Honors Society, the National Spanish Honors Society, and the National Art Honors Society.
This is the fourth year that the Posse Foundation draws students from the Miami-Dade Public School Systems. The Foundation's track record demonstrates that underrepresented, high-achieving, self-motivating students will remain in college through graduation, at higher rates, if they can share the process with members of their own group. In other words, a posse that stays together succeeds together. Posse scholars boast a 90% graduation rate, compared to the 57% national standard rate. This means that successful completion of an undergraduate program not only improves for applicants of multicultural backgrounds, but also for other ethnicities or races, including Caucasians, despite the institution's cultural composition. Students that can rely on ready-made support groups report feeling a higher sense of worth.
Posse partner colleges and universities award Posse Scholars four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships. Each of the four Miami Posse colleges select 10 multicultural groups of students from the Miami area that form a Miami Posse when they go away to that particular school for their college education. This year Posse Miami is associated with top liberal arts schools such as Franklin and Marshall, Syracuse, Hamilton, and Mount Holyoke.

NWSA REPRESENTS @ 2013 CARBONELL AWARDS
Every year New World School of the Arts waits with anticipation to proudly announce the year's Carbonell Award nominees who at some point in their lives roamed the halls of the school - as students, professors or artistic directors. And this year is no exception. With ten nominations in seven categories, NWSA alumni and faculty members will once again grace the stage of Broward Center for the Performing Arts, on March 31, as their walk to the podium to eagerly accept the coveted golden sculpture.
Carbonell Awards are among the nation's senior regional arts awards and predate others including Washington, D.C.'s Helen Hayes Awards. The Carbonell Awards fosters the artistic growth of professional theater in South Florida by celebrating the diversity of our theater artists, providing educational scholarships, and building audience appreciation and civic pride by highlighting achievements of our theater community.
