NWSA SUMMER THEATER ACADEMY - AN INVALUABLE TOOL FOR LOW INCOME HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
NWSA ranks among the 49 recipients of a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of its Knight Arts Challenge. The $25,000 grant will allow the New World School of the Arts Theater Division to create the Summer Theater Academy, a program designed to help talented, low-income students gain a competitive edge in auditions, through training, for collegiate arts programs. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation's Knight Arts Challenge funds ideas that help bring South Florida together through the arts.
"New World School of the Arts has done an unparalleled job of educating the artists who are fueling our local arts scene. This program will extend their efforts, and help to level the playing field for aspiring artists to pursue their goals in higher education," said Dennis Scholl, VP/Arts at Knight Foundation.
Designed for high school students who haven't studied in a specialized or arts magnet school, the academy will offer coaching in audition techniques, interviewing skills and in the research and process of applying to colleges, in addition to private vocal and acting coaching. The goal is for each student to depart from the Summer Theater Academy with two monologues and songs that they can confidently use for college auditions.
"There is an unparalleled opportunity through this grant to reach young students in our community who wouldn't normally have this type of opportunity," said Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, Provost of New World School of the Arts. "We want to shine a light on their talent and let them see the world can be their stage."

REVERENCE, SITE-SPECIFIC PERFORMATIVE INSTALLATIONS, OPEN AT CASALIN DURING ART BASEL
Developed and produced by Wet Heat Project, REVERENCE is a site-specific performative installation at the renowned annual one-day gathering in The Yard@Casalin, on the morning of Art Basel Beach opening day. HOTBED 2013 challenges three NWSA-HOTBED alumni, each in the early years of an emerging career, to collaborate with three NWSA BFA seniors - soon to launch their own practice - and challenges them to produce an ephemeral artwork in a prominent art world location during the pinnacle week of the season. "Two and a Third"
Sebastian Duncan-Portuondo (HOTBED alum) and Joel Rabadan (BFA 2014) will produce an adaptive, encircling space of filtered light and reflection, which continually welcomes with esteem any visitor for a concise, concerted relation of personal crossroads.
"Between Light and Matter"
Jessica Laino (HOTBED alum) and Michelle Izquierdo (BFA 2014) will produce life-size yet intimate views respecting the contours of The Yard's central tree, gathering light and shadows to reveal unseen distinctions and sounds. This piece is a reverential observance, interpretation and reiteration of nature's power to command our attention and provoke a response.
"Boundless"
Chad Cunha (HOTBED alum) and Junli Kato (BFA 2014) will produce a dual-experience, immersive, sensory environment through which all visitors will pass twice. Cloistered by an intuitive architectural sky, an evocative performative tableaux mixes an alternate reality of The Yard with an internal reality of the artist.

AN IDEAL HUSBAND IS MADE... NOT BORN
An Ideal Husband, by Oscar Wilde, comments on misdirected youth, the great value western civilization places upon wealth, the truth of human nature and the complexity of human relationships. "More than anything ideal husbands are not born, they are made," explained director James Randolph, about the play that will be presented by NWSA college juniors. "Oscar Wilde's fame came from his work, his infamy from his life. His vitality, wit and humanity lives in the characters he creates. He was tried and convicted for who and what he was, went to prison and eventually died young as many great artists do alone and penniless. However, his works still live and make statements about the state of things, places and people."

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND INSPIRES US WITH WARM CARIBBEAN FLARE
New World School of the Arts welcomes the holidays with the Olivier-Award winning musical Once on this Island. Under the direction of Stuart Meltzer, this Caribbean-flavored one-act musical by Lynn Ahrens combines the magic of love stories and the art of storytelling to illustrate the ever-present socioeconomic realities of the Caribbean. Presented by NWSA high school seniors and juniors from the music theater program, the musical tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island, after a car accident. As Ti Moune saves his life and nurses Daniel back to health they fall in love and dream the impossible dream of a life together. When Daniel is returned to his people, the gods who rule the island lead Ti Moune on a quest that tests the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.
