Like us on Facebook FACULTY SHOW OFFERS UNEXPECTED PERSPECTIVE. OPENING RECEPTION IS TODAY, DURING THE KICK OFF OF DWNTWN ART DAYS .

New World School of the Arts opens its visual arts season with a varied art exhibition featuring seven NWSA visual arts faculty members. The showcase is an extensive and varied body of work featuring sculptures, painting, drawing, photography, and installations. The NWSA visual arts faculty are all well recognized artists in their own field exhibiting in numerous galleries and museums throughout the nation and internationally.

"The show is truly remarkable," said Maggy Cuesta, dean of the visual arts division at NWSA. "Although all faculty members are familiar with each other's work, the exhibition doesn't cease to surprise them. The participating faculty has moved away from their comfort zone in order to present an unexpected aspect of their artistry. Exploring and exhibiting artworks, not typically associated with their medium of choice allows them to grow as artists, offers them the opportunity to receive constructive criticism from their peers, and helps their students realize that art is much more than just one or two types of work. It is an ever-evolving, ever-growing exploration of the world around us and the way in which we interpret it."

Make sure to stop by tonight during your DWNTWN Art Tours to enjoy our faculty show!

NWSA is among the hundreds of cultural institutions worldwide, from Australia to Zimbabwe, supporting films4peace to celebrate World Peace Day-an international UN day of ceasefire, and a day for individuals, organizations and countries to demonstrate acts of peace.

Curated by Mark Coetzee, ex-Director of the Rubell Family Collection and former faculty member at New World School of the Arts, films4peace is an annual short film commission by PUMA.Peace. Featuring seven of today's most innovative artists visually interpreting the subject of peace, these art films will be released at cultural venues globally, online on World Peace Day on 21 September 2012 on a dedicated films4peace website, through social networking and video sharing sites and blogs amongst others. They are live screened at hundreds of cultural venues, from Human Rights Festivals to major museums public spaces, youth leadership conferences and new media centres, from Dakar, Senegal to Miami, USA to Kashmir, India - in 2012, screenings spanned across 23 countries.

The films include 35 mm live action, experimental animation and fine art approaches. The artists are selected for the quality and scope of their work and their sensitivity in interpreting the theme.

"New World School of the Arts continues to support initiatives where artists use their unique visual voice to illustrate the complex nature of achieving peace. We will be joining in on a worldwide event by screening the films in the NWSA lobby to allow students, faculty, administrators and visitors access to viewing the films in the context of their arrival into the school," said Alisa Pitchenik-Charles, digital media professor at NWSA.

Like us on Facebook NWSA ALUMNA AMONG NATIONAL FINALISTS FOR MUSIC EDUCATOR AWARD
NWSA music alumna, Vivian Gonzalez, is among the 25 music teachers from across the 15 states to have bee selected by the Grammy Foundation as a semifinalist for the Music Educator Award. A first-ever recognition by the Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation, the Music Educator Award was established to recognize current educators (kindergarten through college, public and private schools) who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools. In total, more than 30,000 initial nominations were submitted from all 50 states. The list of contenders for this honor will be narrowed to just 10 finalists in December and one recipient will be selected.

"Having a Grammy Award category open for music educators is profound in its meaning and acknowledgement of music education. I think an award like this helps to shed much needed light on the fact that music education is cross-curricular at it's core, and does teach reading, math, science, history, aesthetics, discipline, and many other very valuable academic and life skills," said Gonzalez.

Vivian Gonzalez began studying the violin at age 5 and at age ten she made her solo debut with the former Philharmonic Orchestra of Florida. Upon graduating from New World School of the Arts High School, Gonzalez attended New World School of the Arts College, the Mannes College in New York, Florida International University and Florida Atlantic University.

Tarell Award
Like us on Facebook NWSA ALUMNI GIVE LIFE TO ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA
A familiar name in the halls and classrooms of New World School of the Arts, Tarell Alvin McCraney, a graduate from the NWSA high school theater program, has selected the cast for his version William Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra. The world-renowned playwright will be working with NWSA dance alum Gelan Lambert, and actor and fellow playwright Charise Castro-Smith, also a graduate of New World School of the Arts.

The Miami Herald's Christine Dolen explains, "The Miami-raised playwright, a rising star in the United States and England, has moved the action of the play to the late 1700s in Saint-Domingue on the eve of the Haitian Revolution against the French.  He is also directing the play, which begins rehearsals this month in England."

Antony and Cleopatra, a collaboration between South Florida's GableStage, Great Britain's Royal Shakespeare Company and New York's Public Theater, is set to open on January 11th at the Colony Theater in Miami Beach.

Like us on Facebook SUMMER INTENSIVES REMIND NWSA PROFESSORS WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE STUDENTS
"Now I have a better understanding of what it's like to be a student," was the recurring statement from NWSA professors who embarked in professional development programs this summer. Sponsored by an anonymous NWSA donor, these faculty members had the opportunity to attend intensives across the globe, not only to hone their craft, but to bring new arts skills, perspectives and world trends to their classrooms.

David Kwiat, theater professor who teaches improvisation to the college students, attended La Mama International Umbria Master Acting Workshops for two weeks. It was an "extraordinary odyssey of self- discovery" said Kwiat. "To have had the opportunity to be exposed to the life-long passion of teaching and mentoring as it was so fully expressed by Kristin Linklater, one of the three Master Teachers, was an absolutely priceless exposure to supreme commitment, a vast understanding of craft, as well as a vital role model for active and meaningful mentoring. It was a revitalizing and invaluable experience to be a student once again. It was humbling to be exposed to the rigors (physically and emotionally) enduring the constant critical feedback, which is the nut of conservatory training. I am eager to share all that I have learned with my students and colleagues. I learned, above all, that it is difficult both physically and emotionally to be a conservatory student and I think it was hugely beneficial for me to be reminded in a very visceral way of that simple truth."

With 80 hours of new intensified training under his belt, James Randolph, also from the  theater division, highlights that he "learned what it meant to be a foreign student and had to make my way in a large city; and be proficient and focused and live the life for a while not as a tourist but as a resident alien and /or University student-adapting to the pace and rhythm of the city and culture." Randolph spent four weeks at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art taking courses on voice, movement and physical theater, and Shakespeare acting and textual analysis. Although he highly values the intellectual aspect of the program, Randolph also notes that, "It was a cultural awakening due to the extraordinary ethnic and cultural diversity in London. It was rewarding and satisfying but at times a struggle; it involved a lot of physical work and I had to get that rhythm back of the constancy of exercise and movement. It is easier to lead a physical task in class than to have to constantly try to execute it. I expect my teaching will be infused with a new energy and sense of purpose."

Associate Professor Jazz Studies, Jim Gasior, participated in the 2013 Summer Symposium produced by the Golandsky Institute, the preeminent center for the Taubman Approach, which instructs instrumentalists in the art of coordinate movement, giving them the tools to play with brilliance and ease. It was held on the campus of Princeton University in Princeton, NJ, along with approximately one hundred other participants who partook in a busy week's schedule of lectures, master classes, performances, and private lessons. The scope of the symposium centered upon the development of improving piano technique. "I consider myself to be a lifelong learner," said Gasior. "I practice, read, and surround myself with people and opportunities to grow as a pianist, musician and teacher. That being said, there is something distinct and constructive about being a student in an academic context - fielding comments and suggestions from a teacher in front of other students."

Tina Santos Wahl, with Nan Giordano
Artistic Director, Giordano Dance Chicago

"Being a ballet teacher for more than 30 years, I needed a personal "re-development" of my other love, jazz dance," confessed Tina Santos Wahl,
Assistant Professor of Dance at NWSA.
Santos attended the Giordano Dance Chicago Jazz Workshop this summer, held at the new Katten-Landau Studio in the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University in the heart of downtown Chicago arts district. The Artistic Director, Nan Giordano, daughter of famed founder-teacher-choreographer, Gus Giordano, welcomed more than 150 students ranging from 10 years old and beyond, as well as many other visiting teachers. Company members taught most classes and gave attendees excerpts from their repertory at the conclusion of the workshop. "Choreography does not come easy for me, therefore, I am realizing I need to get out more and study the different styles of today. This workshop has reiterated that my jazz teaching method is up-to-date. Although I feel refreshed with new ideas and new combinations, the Giordano style remains the same."

A practicing artist and NWSA college faculty member, Aramis O'Reilly had the opportunity to continue his studies at the Grand Central Academy in New York City.  At the academy he was enrolled in a portrait drawing and portrait sculpture class.  Both portraits were based off of the same model and in the same pose.  The drawing class was in the morning and in the afternoon the artist worked in sculpting with clay.

The Grand Central Academy is considered one of the best studios teaching these kinds of atelier studio practices.  Because of their highly skilled and knowledgeable instructors and the success of their program method I learned a great deal of new and useful tools, states Professor O'Reilly, "I had a very fruitful experience that not only advances my own work but also is knowledge that I am able to bring directly to the classroom. I have already begun to apply this working knowledge to all of my studio classes at both the college and high school levels."
