Like us on Facebook THE LARAMIE PROJECT AT THE COLONY THEATER

The New World School of the Arts high school theater program closes the season with the poignant The Laramie Project, a play by Moises Kaufman and the Members of the Tectonic Theater Project, directed by Stuart Meltzer. Patrice Bailey, Dean of Theater at NWSA highlights, "This play offers an opportunity for our students to connect to a hate crime committed on a young man and to explore the different points of view of a story. It is my hope that our students will become activists of tolerance."

Considered by many to be one of the most startling and honest theatrical experiences in the past 20 years, The Laramie Project depicts the events of October 6th of 1998 when Matthew Shepard was beaten and left to die tied to a fence in the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. He died 6 days later. "This play represents the modern day civil rights movement in America," explained Meltzer. "To this day the senseless hate crimes that exist on our nation's campuses are frightening and archaic. It is with plays like The Laramie Project that, if we can open one mind up to tolerance, we have done our job."

Ariel Canino
Like us on Facebook HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR SHOWCASE EXHIBITION
An impressive High School Senior Showcase culminates the 2013 visual arts school year, at Artseen, featuring the work of 24 talented college-bound artists. The student works, representative of the various art disciplines emphasized in the visual arts program, encompass painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and installations.

Among the exhibitors is Ariel Canino. Influenced by a recent trip to Cuba, Canino sculptures represent the current dilapidated state of the island. "He was very moved by his visit to Cuba," said Susan Banks, professor of visual arts at NWSA. "Ariel's strong connection with the people in Cuba and his exposure to the architectural landscape gave him a clear vision of what he wanted to create."

Other must see works include Imani Nixon and Gail Jacques' pieces. Both photography majors, these students' works explore powerful subjects through various experimental mediums. Their expression of every-day situations revealed through the lens of their cameras has garnered them recognition by leading universities across the nation. This has led them to receive full scholarships and housing to Kansas City Institute, where they will both be attending this coming fall.

Opening Reception: May 31; 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The New World Dance Ensemble, comprised of New World School of the Arts (NWSA) college dance alumni and college merit scholarship students, will present three performances of the work of British choreographer Darshan Singh Bhuller. The first two performances will be offered in Miami and, accompanied by Mary Lisa Burns, Dean of dance at NWSA, the 13-member New World Dance Ensemble cast will then travel to New York City to present the third and last show.

"Working with the New World School of the Arts over the past six years has given me the opportunity to test ideas that I develop further with my own professional company in London," said Bhuller. "This year, to my surprise, I've been given the honor to present a full evening of my work, including some of the pieces which were first choreographed on the school. Present students and Alums will form the New World Dance Ensemble performing in this project. This is a very exciting project for me, but more importantly it is a chance for these amazing dancers to be seen here in Miami and New York City."

The dynamic program will include the powerful dance/drama, The Virgin Queen, a choreography about romantic betrayal and palace intrigue in the court of Queen Elizabeth; Mapping #4, an abstract evocation about cultural dislocation and human connection, set to the music of Ravi Shankar, Laal, the powerful and virtuosic solo; and Stand and Stair, a duet originally choreographed on the Rambert Ballet Company based on the paintings of English painter L.S. Lowry. The passionate duet, Interlock, performed with live sitar accompaniment will round off the three presentations.

Danny Lewis, founding dean of dance at NWSA, received an award in dance education from the José Limón Dance Foundation at the Capitale in New York City on April 29.

"José Limón was my Artistic Mentor," said Lewis, former dean of dance. "I danced in his company for over 14 year and was the acting Artistic Director of his company for one year, after his death. I was fortunate to be part of many of José's creations and was privilege to be part of his creative process. This honor means so much to me as I learned so much from this man's artistry.  This made me a great teacher and I love sharing this knowledge with all my students."

A graduate from the high school (1995) and BFA (2000) visual arts program at NWSA, Todd Eliott Mansa is one of Miami's pioneering artists of color to be recognized not only for his exceptional technique in painting but also for what these pieces signify - to him and to his community.

Showcasing auto-biographical scenes through photo-realistic urban paintings during Art Basel, Mansa has quickly claimed a unique place among respected African-American artists from Miami. Now, as announced in the Knight Blog, Todd will be attending the Yale MFA painting program, joining the ranks of other Miamians including William Cordova, Luis Gispert and John Espinosa, who have also followed that remarkable path. Tarell A. McCraney, a theater alum from NWSA also received his MFA from Yale University.
