Beaux StratagemLike us on Facebook THE BEAUX STRATAGEM WRAPS UP THE COLLEGE THEATER SEASON
New World School of the Arts college theater students present the once forgotten restoration comedy The Beaux Stratagem, by George Farguhar, adapted by Thornton Wilder and Ken Ludwig. With a cast of college juniors and seniors, NWSA acting professor James Randolph directs the play with the assistance of published author Edward Rozinsky, who serves as fight director. "Ludwig has found the best of both worlds - the spirit as soul of the English Restoration combined with the modern sensibilities of the modern world. For our program this gives our students the opportunity to discover the glory of this style and this language and period. At its center The Beaux Stratagem is a romantic comedy that reflects a timeless value; love is a glorious thing, but it's even better with money attached," explained Randolph.

This plays reflects a zany, wild and comic struggle of love, sex and money as two young gentlemen who have title but no money go through the English countryside in the early 1700s looking for rich but beautiful young women to romance, with the hope of achieving marriage and financial security. Complications ensue when two beautiful women come across highwaymen, a corrupt merchant and a gentlewoman who practices medicine without a license.

NWSA college dancers will perform a Cunningham MinEvent as part of the Fridays At Noon series entitled Merce Cunningham: New Perspectives, A Living Legacy, in New York City. Constructed expressly for the NWSA college dancers by Patricia Lent, Trustee and Director of Licensing for the Merce Cunningham Trust, in the form of a MinEvent, the work includes material from Cunningham's Roaratorio (1982), Enter (1992), and Fabrications (1987). The MinEvent will also be offered to the South Florida community during NWSA's College Spring Dance Concert.

Mary Lisa Burns, Dean of Dance at New World School of the Arts, and a former Cunningham Studio Faculty Member and Director of Education for the Cunningham Dance Foundation states: "We are thrilled to be included in this important program at the 92nd Street Y, which is providing an opportunity for audiences to see the work of Merce Cunningham as it is embodied by these outstanding young dancers. It is wonderful to see the ways in which Merce's legacy lives and remains vital and relevant to the dance training of today."

Domenico Cimarosa's two-act opera, The Secret Marriage (Il Matrimonio Segreto), with guest artist Stefanos Koroneos, will be presented by a cast of college students from the New World School of the Arts College Opera Theater Ensemble. Directed by Rodney Miller, the ensemble, mostly graduating college seniors majoring in voice, will have the opportunity to appear in a professional-level production staged by Donald Westwood, a director with national and international credits. Under the baton of Alfred Gershfeld, the fully staged opera will be accompanied by the NWSA Symphony Orchestra and includes magnificent period costumes, scenery and props.

The Secret Marriage is set in Italy in the 18th Century. Geronimo, a formerly wealthy merchant, has lofty ambitions for his two daughters and dreams of aristocratic marriages for both young ladies. In terms of practical matters, Geronimo's sister, Fidalma, a wealthy widow, supports the family. Carolina, Geronimo's youngest daughter, is secretly married to Paolino, Geronimo's private secretary. Much more intrigue and romantic interludes ensue and Geronimo, caught in the vortex of the drama, struggles to restore peace to his household.

Jackie Albano, NWSA college freshman, will join twelve winning writers and eleven other illustrators from around the globe as they are honored during the 29th Annual L. Ron Hubbard Achievement Awards at the famed Wilshire Ebell Theatre.

illustration Born and raised in Miramar, Florida, Jackie Albano has been teaching herself to draw since the age of nine. She grew up watching cartoons and listening to stories (often adventurous), which were read to her every night. Jackie knew then that all she wanted to do in life was to show the fantastical worlds brewing in her imagination. She decided to do this through illustrations, concept art and comics. In middle school, Jackie discovered Japanese animations director Hayao Miyazaki, who creates beautiful animated fantasy films. Upon watching them, she decided that she would follow Miyazaki into the world of animation. Now at the age of 18, Jackie has started her first year of art school at New World School of the Arts, where she plans to study digital media in the visual arts. At NWSA she hopes to create animated shorts and work on projects with fellow animation students.

TARELL MCCRANEY

NWSA 1999 theater alum and world-renowned playwright, Tarell A. McCraney, has been selected by Yale University, his Graduate school alma mater, to receive one of nine Windham-Campbell Prizes for his recent staging of Hamlet. This outstanding achievement comes with a monetary award of $150,000. The awards recognize talent in fiction, nonfiction, and drama.

McCraney was one of three playwrights selected for the honor,
Named for Donald Windham and Sandy M. Campbell, who donated the money for the awards, the Windham-Campbell Prizes are new this year and will be given out in September during a literary festival at Yale.

The 90-minute one act Hamlet made its original American premiere at GableStage at the Biltmore in January, to favorable reviews. The trimmed down version of Shakespeare's play was conceived in 2010 when McCraney and Gregory Doran, artistic director at the Royal Shakespeare Company, sought to create a touring version of the timeless play.
