THE EXCITEMENT CONTINUES IN 2013
With a warm New Year's welcome, the excitement at New World School of the Arts escalates as we offer our community a plethora of exciting performances, concerts and exhibitions. From photo exhibitions, to the highly acclaimed musical Cabaret, to our signature Symphony Orchestra Concert - just to name a few - the months ahead promise as much exhilaration as ever. As you continue to support our students by attending our venues, you are helping them fulfill their dream. The passion of an artist lives within; but talent and artistry can only remain alive and thriving when the audience demonstrates their willingness to embrace it. We look forward to sharing the remaining academic year with you and your loved ones.

IN COLLABORATION WITH THE NEW WORLD SYMPHONY, NWSA PRESENTS THE WORK OF MERCE CUNNINGHAM IN A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO COMPOSER JOHN CAGE Eighteen NWSA Dance Division students have been selected by former Merce Cunningham Dance Company member Patricia Lent to learn the work of Merce Cunningham. "There is no better way to promote Merce Cunningham's legacy than to share his choreography with young dancers," commented Lent. "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work intensively with this group of talented, enthusiastic students on such a unique project. I am confident that our time together in the rehearsal studio and on stage will be filled with challenges and discoveries."
The choreography will be presented in the form of what Cunningham referred to as an "Event" for performance in collaboration with the New World Symphony, as part of a special weekend celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Cunningham's musical collaborator, composer John Cage.
The NWSA dancers are excited to be invited to collaborate with the New World Symphony, with the Cage composition Sixteen Dances, to be performed live by the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas.
In addition, the NWSA students will participate in a performance of Cunningham's indeterminate dance work, Field Dances, accompanied by Cage's Renga with the New World Symphony on Sunday.
"I am thrilled that our students will have the experience of learning Merce's work from Patricia Lent, who brings it to life so vividly, in addition to having the opportunity to perform it to the music of John Cage played live at the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas," said Mary Lisa Burn, dean of dance at New World School of the Arts. "It will be a truly exciting artistic and educational experience for them and we are delighted to be collaborating in these programs with both the Merce Cunningham Trust and the New World Symphony. As the former Director of Education for the Cunningham Dance Foundation, I am personally delighted that our community will have these upcoming opportunities to see the works of both Cage and Cunningham performed with such authenticity by these talented young dancers and musicians."

THE KIT KAT KLUB COMES ALIVE AT NWSA IN CABARET New World School of the Art's college theater students brings life to the seedy Kit Kat Klub as they present the popular musical CABARET. Written by Christopher Isherwood with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, the NWSA production will be directed by Dean of Theater Patrice Bailey with musical direction by Jeff Hess. The 26-member cast comprised of college sophomores, juniors, and seniors will be accompanied live by the NWSA music students. "The first Theatrical production of Cabaret opened in 1966 and it is fascinating to explore this production 46 years later to find that it still has tremendous resonance today," said Bailey. "Cabaret offers our students the opportunity to explore the "moral decay" and the political agenda of Nazi Germany in the 1930's and to discover that much of the political rhetoric hasn't changed much in today's world." February 8, 9, 15, 16; 7:30 PM February 10, 17; 2:00 PM Louise O. Gerrits Theater 25 NE 2 Street, 8th Floor, downtown Miami General admission is $15. Students and seniors is $5 Information at 305-237-354 |
