PREVIEW BENEFIT PERFORMANCE OF SHAKESPEARE'S HAMLET
TO BENEFIT NEW WORLD SCHOOL OF THE ARTS
GableStage at the Biltmore will be presenting a Preview Benefit Performance of Hamlet to benefit the theater division of New World School of the Arts. Directed and adapted for London's Royal Shakespeare Company by NWSA theater alumnus Tarell Alvin McCraney, the American premiere is a 90-minute high-energy version of the most powerful and important tragedy in the English Language.
Award-winning playwright Tarell McCraney assured us that "Shakespeare's plays aren't meant to be 'read', for understanding they are meant to be played. Seeing and doing are feeling and engaging. And the best place for that to happen is live. If you or I were not here that moment would not have happened. That cannot be duplicated. Our students deserve the chance to play Shakespeare. Not just read it."
The cast, which includes Alana Arenas, Mimi Davila, Ryan George, Peter Haig, Arielle Hoffman, Dylan Kammerer, Edgar Sanchez, Bruce Lecure and Kristen Piesk, also features NWSA college acting juniors Jose Alfredo Ramirez, Michael Napoles, and Laura De Lorenzo, as well as NWSA theater faculty James Randolph.
"This event is one of the most exciting theater productions to see this season. After the successful run of the Brother Size, Tarell continues to be committed to bring quality productions and performances to South Florida," commented Patrice Bailey, dean of theater at NWSA during a recent rehearsal session at New World School of the Arts.
"In addition, Tarell has brought back to Miami, Alana Arenas, who is also a New World alum and an ensemble member of the prestigious Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago to appear in this production. The theater division is very proud of our alumni who continue to give back to the school and to the theater community while they pursue successful careers."
"We truly value our ongoing and very close relationship with the students, faculty and alumni in the theater department at New World School of the Arts," said Producing Artistic Director of GableStage at the Biltmore, Joseph Adler, "we are thrilled to continue our collaboration with them."
GableStage will donate 100% of the proceeds to the New World School of the Arts theater division.

DANIEL LEWIS, NWSA FOUNDING DEAN OF DANCE, RECEIVES AN HONORARY DOCTOR OF FINE ARTS DEGREE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA
Daniel Lewis, founding dean of the dance division in Miami's New World School of the Arts received an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Florida for his leadership in dance and education in an artistic discipline.
"I have been in dance education for over 45 years and while I have received many accolades and lifetime achievement awards, I feel most privileged to have been able to help foster a new generation of dancers, choreographers and dance educators. I am so pleased that the University of Florida has chosen to bestow upon me an honorary doctorate in the arts. Receiving this award is the highest honor one can get in education. My main goal now, at this point in my life, is to take the time to become an artist again, and to make sure every child get introduced to the arts at an early age. This is the unique thing that separates us from all other animals: we have the capacity, and the need, to make art," expressed Daniel Lewis as he accepted his impressive recognition earlier last week during a reception held at the University of Florida.
Internationally recognized as a dancer, educator, choreographer, and author, Lewis was integral in the development of NWSA's eight-year professional dance program which began in 1987, bringing more than thirty years of experience in the field, and an unparalleled awareness of modern dance to South Florida.
