NWSA'S DAVID KWIAT - SO YOU THINK YOU'RE CREATIVE? David Kwiat, professor of acting at NWSA was recently interviewed by Public Radio International for their weekly show "Studio 360" - and their most recent episode, So You Think You are Creative? Although his contribution is less than a minute long (starting 8:00 minutes into the hour long broadcast), the entire show is fascinating. David, who was asked to participate in a longitudinal study about creativity that started when he was in 4th grade says, "This particular episode, So You Think You are Creative? touched on the all-important question; can creativity be quantified? As a participant in a 50-year (and counting) longitudinal study on creativity, I was given a battery of tests at the elementary school on the campus of the University of Minnesota in order to quantify factors of creativity. Whether creative output in later life can be identified at an early age -- the jury is still out on that. But, as we all know, dedicated teachers make a huge difference in our lives." One of David's mentors came very early in his life - his 4th grade teacher, Mr. Myers, whom he credits with making a difference in the lives he touched with his teaching. "He, like so many of the faculty at New World School of the Arts, cultivate and nurture the creative spark in their students." Listen to the complete podcast

NWSA AND UF DANCERS' GLOBAL LINK THROUGH ICONS OF INNOVATIONS
ICONS of INNOVATION emerged as the performance outcome of the new course entitled "Movement, Media and Machines" co-taught online and in person by UF Professors James Oliverio and Kristin O'Neal for New World School of the Arts students in Miami and University of Florida students at the Digital Worlds Institute's Research, Education and Visualization Environment (REVE) in Gainesville. ICONS is a performing arts research project that received its World Premiere for the International Digital Media and Arts Association (IDMAA) Conference 2012 with performers in both Miami and Gainesville and remote audiences in Salt Lake City and Ecuador. It combined real-time motion capture transduced into a gaming engine and audiences across North and South America were able to use their Smartphones to text in a vote for various options related to the live performance that then unfolded before their eyes. This provided both the live studio audiences and participants in remote sites around the world with a truly interactive experience with the performance artists.
According to project director Oliverio, "ICONS is a continuation of the fruitful partnership that New World Dance and UF Digital Worlds have developed in pioneering distributed online performance, but this was the first time we created a semester-long course as a means of engaging students in the entire process of creating a new interactive media piece. By linking students in Miami and Gainesville online, we were able to take the first steps towards providing performing arts students with a deeper understanding and appreciation of interactive digital media and its potential to extend the reach of the arts in the 21st century."
