Martin Kreloff CELEBRATED ARTIST MARTIN KRELOFF

HONORS NWSA WITH MIAMI SAYS ART-2

Miami's art community in 1976 was very different than today's Art Basel-fueled frenzy. But when the city's cultural leaders were brought together back then by pied-piper artist Martin Kreloff for the original Miami Says ART, little did they know as they looked into his camera and shouted "ART" that they were foreshadowing an art destination no one could have dreamed would happen. Thirty-five years later, some of these same influencers that shaped Miami's arts community are being reunited for a retrospective by the visionary artist - and the launch of Miami Says ART-2. Partnering with students from NWSA on a new web-installation, Kreloff's new initiative features an online, modern-day cultural time capsule that will honor New World School of the Arts throughout its 25th anniversary year of 2013.

"Representing the 'future' in this time capsule, and working with Marty, is a great opportunity for our students," says Dennis Edwards, Foundation Board Chair for New World School of the Arts For the new online cultural time capsule, some of the community's new cultural champions along with ten NWSA visual arts students are being selected to pose for the cameras, once again saying, "ART" to celebrate Miami.

Retrospective Exhibition: December 3 - 9; 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM

Opera theater ensemble COMEDY AND DRAMA WITH OPERA THEATER ENSEMBLE

The New World School of the Arts Opera Ensemble, directed by Rodney Miller, will present an evening of operatic comedy and drama. Accompanied by Caren Levine of the Metropolitan Opera, the talented NWSA singers will present scenes and arias by some of opera's greatest composers, including: Mozart, Massenet, Menotti, Copland, and Britten.

The Opera Theater Ensemble is a small, select group of young singers chosen by audition to join New World School of the Arts, where they work in a conservatory like training program that emphasizes solo performance while developing their performance skills in the classroom, in scenes, and full opera productions. Through these many experiences, NWSA opera singers have the opportunity to become more accomplished performers who can compete successfully in applying to graduate programs and young artists training programs.

Casalin OUT OF SITE'S INCONSPICUOUS CLOUT

A site-specific exhibition comprised of multiple installations, Out of Site aims to uncover the hidden treasures of artistic expression set amidst a tropical natural backdrop. Challenged with the task of creating specific works that are camouflaged or just barely there, New World School of the Arts college alumni, students and faculty members will once again showcase their work at the Yard@Casalin during 2012 Art Basel.

Curated by Miami gallerist Fredric Snitzer, among the work to be exhibited is Carol Brown's scattered tiny, framed paintings of women who devote all their time/energy to the world of art - writers, curators, museum directors, gallerists, art historians and artists. These women are heroes, painted in traditional military style (often portrayed with weapons). In Kayla Delacerda's installation, Clove Hill, an overwhelming scent of cloves and an intrusive amount of anthills in the garden create a puzzling experience you won't want to miss. Exhibiting artists are: Carol Brown, Kayla Delacerda, Rafael Domenech, Herman Felipe Kaizedo, Don Lambert, Natalya Laskis, Joshua Levine, Michael Loveland, Francesca Pisfil, Colin Sherrell, Brandon Sweet and Jovan Villalba.

the Pkays the Thing

TO BE OR NOT TO BE... SHAKESPEARE. REALLY?

A theater studio presentation by the junior college class, The Play's the Thing, selected works of William Shakespeare, directed by James Samuel Randolph, resurfaces the lasting question of William Shakespeare's identity as a man and as a writer. The literary genius has been linked to Edward DeVere the 17th Earl of Oxford, a prolific writer who many believe wrote under the pen name of William Shakespeare during his adult years. Francis Bacon is also thought to be the true voice of these works. Although Bacon was an undisputed man of letters, his style and expression vary greatly from that of Shakespeare's works. Christopher Marlowe would be the ultimate ghostwriter. To some, Marlowe was forced to fake his own death; however he went on for an undetermined number of years penning poetry and plays under the nom de plume of Shakespeare.

According to Randolph, "Whomever he was, the works displaying a gold mine of literary merit that contain great plots, universal themes and unforgettable characters show the theatrical equivalent of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; a voice, a writer and a mind touched by other worldly powers. In any case we are here to celebrate the works and let the texts come alive again for this generation of actors and audiences."

Plebeians

THE PLEBEIANS REHEARSE THE UPRISING

The first play by celebrated German author, playwright and poet, Gunther Grass, is the Theatre Division's Sophomore Showcase selection. Andrew Noble, who returned to NWSA from retirement, to direct it explains, "The play offers great challenges for the drama students with wonderful opportunities for their social, artistic and educational development. The Arab Spring, the Wall Street Sit-in, the Wisconsin 8, the erosion of collective bargaining, the US Presidential election on "the economy", the power/sway of major corporations and lobbyists, and deregulation are elements of the times during which our students are growing up. Such social issues do not exist in a vacuum but are part of a continuum. It seemed appropriate, therefore, to research events before the sophomores were born, that have created the world in which they now live."

The Plebeians Rehearse the Uprising is based on fact, the events of June 17th, 1953, during the Cold War in East Berlin, when workers rebel against oppressive measures but lacked a voice and a leader. They turn to Bertolt Brecht, the famed Communist director and playwright, (referred to as "the Boss"in the play) who is shown rehearsing his adaptation of Shakespeares's "Coriolanus". Outside events spill into the theater, as a workers' delegation demands that the Boss lend his authority to their struggle for justice and freedom. The intellectual is shown in a tragic dilemma, torn between reasoning and active commitment.
