Words And Their Stories Word of the Month
Here's one of our favorite words from Words And Their Stories, our award-winning web-based vocabulary program for grades 5-12:

AUSPICIOUS
POS: adjective. Pronunciation: aw-spish´-us.

Derivation: The word auspicious is a combination of the Latin noun avis, meaning "bird," and the Latin verb spicio, meaning "to watch." Bird watching was more than a hobby for Romans, who looked at the types, formations, and even flight patterns of birds as omens that could give them direction in their everyday lives. For instance, Roman generals always checked with their professional bird analysts before going into battle.

Definition: Auspicious means "marked by success; favorable; promising."
