Feng Shui Friday

It's a spring Feng Shui Friday. The grass is green, the sun is shining, spring bulbs are blooming and we may experience snow again in Denver on Sunday.  Colorado certainly knows how to keep Mrs. Chi on her toes.

This week I'm wrapping up the series on Conquering Clutter: The First Step to Downsizing with Tip #6 plus ways to stay motivated and celebrate your success. My wish for you is to clear the clutter the feng shui way so you can live your life with more balance and harmony. Happy de-cluttering.

Feng Shui Tip of the Week

Tip #6 is Creating Sacred Space by Setting Boundaries. In feng shui sacred space is created by clutter clearing, house cleaning, burning sage, bells and clapping to refresh the energy in the space, opening windows to let in fresh air. Then we make the space feel wonderful for the occupants with color, décor, balanced elements, and intention. The goal is to invite positive chi so that every time you enter your home you feel blessed, grateful, energized, comfortable, relaxed, and filled with the emotion that creates a sense of nurturing and feels good. It makes no difference if you live in 750 sq. ft. or 7500 sq.ft., create sacred space--that is honor and respect for the space and all it holds.

Setting boundaries.  A first step to creating sacred space is setting boundaries. Decide how much room to allow for certain items: memorabilia, books, CDs and movies, clothing, or holiday decorations, and then make a pact with yourself not to purchase more storage tubs, another book shelf, more CD racks, another file cabinet, or to use the guest room closet for an expanded wardrobe. Be ruthless!  BE not HAVE.  If you purchase a new sweater or cooking pans, let go of one or more you no longer love, use or need (one in two out).  Use up what you have before purchasing more. Practice the "3 is the magic number" principle. Limit the incoming.

Simplifying to downsize.  Whether or not you're moving, simplifying can help you downsize your expenses, to do lists, time commitments, or living and office spaces.  With less you have more time, money, energy, health and safety. Since the focus has been downsizing, if you know where you're moving, the square footage and floor plan, it's easier to set boundaries of what will fit and what won't.  With less square footage you can more easily determine what to keep and what to let go.  Make decisions before you move so you can create sacred space in your new location. If you're going to keep something--whether you're simplifying, downsizing, or moving-make it sacred.

Clean and restore antiques and display them proudly. Make shadow boxes with photos, old gloves, a handkerchief, small toys, a first place blue ribbon or report card.  Create a quilt of old clothing, jeans, t-shirts, doilies, tablecloths or cloth napkins.  Frame and mat your children's or grandchildren's art work or laminate and use them as placemats.  Use it or lose it.  This year I am creating sacred space and boundaries around photos.  I have become the holder of my mother's and father's and their parents photos.  So this year, my daughter and I are making photo books--one for each parent and each side of the family.  For many years I scrapbooked and have all those supplies to sell or donate at the next garage sale.  Thanks to technology, once these compact books are completed, they will feel sacred and I will feel comfortable letting go of the photos.  These are perfect memory joggers for when I get old (-er) and they take up so little space.

Staying motivated. And if clean shelves, empty drawers, open basements and garages are not enough to stay motivated how about psyching yourself out.  Make deals with yourself so that after a half hour you can read your favorite book or have a glass of wine or take a nap.  Or maybe creating consequences is a better motivator for you.  Someone told me a story about a woman who really wanted to lose weight or save money--something big--so she decided to write a check for a significantly large amount of money to the "other" political party--the one with which she didn't affiliate.  If she didn't meet her goal, her friend had permission to send in the check.  Or, perhaps if you really don't want to watch your sister's difficult kids, tell yourself you will if you don't get that guest room cleared out by a certain date.  Be accountable to someone. Find a support person to check in with before and after your clutter clearing projects.  And remember to plan rewards: something fun, something relaxing, something personal, something special or new (experiences only NO stuff), or something simple.

And the last important thing I learned is to Celebrate!
Remember that clearing clutter is a process.  Never give up. More often than not the incoming is out of your control. Always remember your end goal. Why are you de-cluttering, simplifying or downsizing? Why is it important to you? What will you do with all that space you've created?  Then be sure to include plenty of room for Celebration: after each inch of progress; after you've reached a mini goal; when someone gives you a compliment; when you get rid of anything you do not love, use or need; when you make a decision NOT to bring it home; and when you know you're enough just the way you are.

This week as you review and decide what to keep and what to let go, consider how much you respect and honor each particular item. Is it important enough to clean and display proudly? Will its presence help make your space feel nurturing and sacred? Is it worth the honor of your space, time and energy?  With the downsizing, simplifying, and de-clutter tips and tools from the past few months, I hope you've been able to create the perfect sacred space that brings you an abundance of good feng shui.
