Feng Shui Friday

September 6, 2013

Greetings!

Happy September Feng Shui Friday!  I always think of September as 'going back to school' month.  I look forward to getting in the 'know', taking classes, reading, and learning.  Whether it's yoga, Spanish, meditation, photography or tennis, find something you've always wanted to learn and sign up!

This week I'm moving from mental clutter to emotional - HEART - clutter.  In some respects, I think it's difficult to separate mental and emotional clutter because as soon as we start feeling emotional sadness, discomfort, anger, or fear it usually triggers head games and mental clutter: What was I thinking? She hates me now. Worry.  Guilt.  What-if's and If Only's.  For the next couple weeks let's take a look at emotional clutter and ways to let it go the feng shui way.

Note:  As I mentioned a couple weeks ago, Autumn/Fall is a metal element in feng shui: communication, discernment, focus, brilliant ideas.  Add something metal to your desk (pencil cup, file tray, photo frame, bronze sculpture).

Feng Shui Tip of the Week
hearts

Love or Fear.  Practically speaking, we only have two choices when it comes to feelings of the heart.  Love based feelings or fear based feelings.  Love is all the happy emotions: joy, peace, enjoyment, compassion, forgiveness, pleasure, giddiness, excitement, confidence, patience, bliss, ecstasy, elation, thrill.  Fear is the negative emotions: anger, sadness, loneliness, frustration, impatience, rage, frenzy, depression, obsession, worry, guilt, irritation, annoyance, anxiety.  In feng shui we bring items into our space to represent who we are and where we're going.  You get the same choice of what to bring into your heart space -- love emotions or fear emotions.  Decide how you want to feng shui your heart, and begin to fill the space with your intentions.

Happy Cells.  Just like mind clutter, our hearts can only hold so much.  If we fill the space with things we do not love, use or need -- negative emotions -- we leave little to no space for the positive emotions.  Many years ago a personal trauma sent me spiraling into a significant depression.  After too many months of sadness and the inability to get out of bed in the morning, no joy and no hope, my doctor prescribed anti-depressants.  They worked and within a year I was off the medication and haven't needed it since.  One thing I remember from that experience is a little cartoon the doctor showed me: two stick figures with balloons above their heads.  One balloon was filled with all letter A's (happy cells) and a few B's (depressed unhappy cells) and the other stick figure's balloon filled with all B's and only a few A's.  It was explained that medication doesn't destroy the depressed or unhappy cells, but instead, the medication is designed to encourage the growth of happy cells so the more happy cells, the more easily they multiple, eventually outnumbering the unhappy cells.

Just like a magnet.  I've found that clutter is clutter, no matter its form.  It shows up as stuff in our homes and offices as well as our minds and hearts.  Clutter is like a magnet -- acting just like those unhappy, depressed cells.  The more clutter we have in our lives, the more it attracts and grows and multiplies.  A few items on the counter or in the corner of the guest room becomes a huge pile twice its size and the guest room suddenly turned into a storage room.  In my feng shui book and Feng Shui Fridays, you've heard me say dozens of times: where intention goes, energy flows.  That magnet of unhappy negative feelings will continue to attract and multiply more negative exactly the same way positive happy feelings will multiply.  Your choice:  Love Emotions and Happy Feelings.  Your medication: happy activities, happy thoughts, happy feelings, hugs, supportive friends, happy movies, and happy memories.  The more happy you take each day the more happy feelings that eventually leave little to no space for unhappy.  What's your choice?

This week if you begin to feel a fear emotion rising up, see if you can take a breath and add a Love or happy feeling to fill the space.  Imagine a balloon above your head filled with Ls (Love), multiplying and filling the space with no room left for the Fs (fear).   Be happy!

 Until Next Week
