Feng Shui Friday

August 9, 2013

Greetings!

Happy Feng Shui Friday.  I started my clutter clearing journey in 1990, studying, researching and questioning the why of possessions, stuff, the desire and need to acquire, and the difficulty in letting go.  When I was introduced to feng shui, the clutter challenges made much more sense.   Once we understand the energy in our stuff, we can begin to understand how it keeps us where we are and can slow down the process in getting where we want to go.

Clutter shows up not only in our homes, offices, car, environment, but also mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically.  For the next several weeks let's take a look at mental clutter and see how we can clear that clutter the feng shui way.

Feng Shui Tip of the Week

What's on your mind?   This week's focus in on all that stuff in your head.  Mental clutter shows up as 'shoulds', obligations, and postponed decisions.  It's all that stuff on your mind: errands, projects, responsibilities, worry, what-ifs.  In his book Getting Things Done, David Allen says, "the reason something is 'on your mind' is that you want it to be different than it currently is" and you haven't yet clarified the outcome, decided on the next step, and or haven't got a system of follow-up or action that you trust.  His suggestion:  get it out of your mind and on to a list.

Lists.  The problem with lists can be having too many of them. Now you've got physical clutter on calendars, post-it-notes, scribbled on anything, on the notes app of your smart phone. How about just one list (a home) where everything goes--you pick:  notes app on phone, calendar, spiral notebook, day timer.  Simplify and minimize with one place.  Once it's all on one list, it's easier to sort the priorities from the things that are irrelevant or past their action or event date or deadline.  This week, get things off your mind and on a list as soon as possible.

Action.  Ultimately the goal of mental clutter clearing is to let go of anything you do not love, use or need and make room for creativity, new ideas, and peace of mind.  If you keep things on 'The List' and don't do something to remedy, finalize, delegate, do, or delete, 'The List' will continue to be on your mind. As soon as you take action you shift the energy and support positive chi.  Check your list regularly and do, delegate, or dump and keep clearing that mental clutter.

This week start a Master To Do List.  Get things off your mind and on The List.  Then schedule regular check-ins and take action on the items on The List.  Start with a minimum of three items per day and see if you can keep The List clutter cleared and your mental chi peaceful.

Until Next Week
