Feng Shui First Fridays

May 3, 2013

Greetings!

As I'm writing (May 1) for this month's Feng Shui First Friday...it's SNOWING!  What's up with that?  No matter, it has not deterred me from clutter clearing like a mad woman.  Snow or no snow, we are participating in our neighborhood/community garage sale this weekend.

After 35 years in this house, my husband Bob and I have accumulated way too much stuff.  So in hopes that someday soon we can downsize and move somewhere maintenance-free, we have begun Phase I of our plan.

Because clutter clearing is the prerequisite to good feng shui, I'm looking forward to an amazing shift in energy as we clear clutter--the feng shui way!

Feng Shui Tip of the Week

garage clutter

Maybe it's my planets, maybe it's all the positive success emails from readers who are making progress with their clutter clearing, maybe it's listening to Karen Kingston at Feng Shui Tribe. And maybe it's all of the above. Whatever the reasons, we have made significant progress in letting go, clearing the clutter, and making room for change in our lives.  Here's what I've discovered.

Support.  Our neighborhood is having their annual community garage sale this weekend.  It's been advertised for the past couple months and we decided it was time to participate.  When you can find a partner or organization that does all the work at no cost to those participating as a community service--advertising, making maps, organizing charity pickup at the end of the event, and arranging for a dumpster to dump anything that isn't saleable--there just aren't any more excuses!  With this much support and good chi, it's the perfect opportunity to purge. Clutter clearing is easier when you have a defined goal: move date, garage sale date,  listing date, or an event like guests or someone moving in with you.  Consider working with friends and neighbors to set a date for your own sale and support each other.  And having your partner's (or family) support is key!

Motivation.  My sister and her husband are moving to Dubai in August.  She will be teaching English at the international high school for the next two years. Bob and I discussed selling our house and moving into their home as we transition into downsizing.  The idea had great benefits for all parties. And with the neighborhood garage sale coming up, we were clearly motivated to start getting rid of stuff. While we may not be able to accomplish the move this year, we are motivated now to downsize considerably in expectation of moving there next year, putting as little as possible in storage, traveling, or looking for a smaller home.  Getting rid of all this stuff lifts our energy, shifts the energy, and creates an environment that invites change.  What will it take to get you motivated?

Rewards.  What could be a better reward than money? In addition to feeling so much better with empty shelves, open closets, and a clean basement and garage, money is nice. Bob took years of recycled metal to Western Metal Recycling and came home with $400 yesterday. OMG! And garage sale profits will pay for part of and maybe all our road trip to visit family in Kansas and Missouri the end of May. If you choose to donate rather than sell, tax deductions is money in your pocket, too. Support your Prosperity and Abundance gua by letting go and rewarding yourself.

NOTE: If you've been following me for some time, you know that garage sales are not my thing. I really had to have a serious talk with Mrs. Chi to convince me that this would be worth my time and energy.  She convinced me by suggesting that I simplify the process.  So rather than writing individual prices on hundreds of stickers I put white adhesive dots on items .50 each or 3 for $1 and green adhesive dots on items $2 each or 3 for $5. Then I made a sign for each table to advertise this Mix n'Match option. So much easier to stick on a white dot and sort for two tables. And by doing this I set my intentions for no haggling and selling lots of stuff by keeping prices low. I did mark larger items $5 and $10 with individual price tags, but so much simpler for all the little stuff.

This month consider what you need to support and motivate you toward the rewards of clearing clutter--the feng shui way.

Until next time
