Winter Garden UMW Opens 50 Year Memory Box
As part of the celebration of the 120th anniversary of our church the United Methodist Women are holding Living Our Legacy events.

The first Living Our Legacy event was celebrated at our annual Mother, Daughter, Friend Luncheon in May.  At that time we took a look back at our 70 years of history within First United Methodist of Winter Garden, and looked forward to the future.  Among the activities at our luncheon was the opening of our Memory Box.

This Memory Box was first filled and placed in a niche in the church narthex in 1965 as a part of the celebration of the first 25 years (1940 - 1965) of mission and community efforts by the women of the church.  In 1965, the United Methodist Women were still organized as the Women's Society of Christian Service.  As part of the 50th anniversary celebration in 1990, the box was opened and refilled with items from 1965 and new 1990 items.

On August 12th we held our 2nd Living the Legacy event in the Fellowship Hall. All the ladies of the church were invited to a covered dish dinner.  The focus of this gathering was examination of the Memory Box.  The contents of the box were on display so that members could take a closer look.    The highlight of the evening was the reading of the Letters to the Future.
In 1990 our unit president and the president of each circle wrote a letter to the future.  These letters along with the one that had been written by our unit president in 1965 were sealed in the memory box.  At our dinner each of these letters was read.

Mrs. Elizabeth Youngblood, who was our 1965 unit president, read the letter she wrote, and our 1990 president, Mrs. Nancy Sines, read the letter she wrote.  The other letters were presented by current members of each circle or by a relative of one of the circle members.

Sadly, the Alpha Circle no longer exists, but Mrs. Nancy Gracey, daughter-in-law of Alpha sister, Mrs. Dorothy Gracey, read the Alpha Circle letter.  Mrs. Jackie Teal did the honors for the Candlelight Circle.  Mrs. Andy Davis presented the letter from the Good Morning Circle in honor of her mother-in-law, Mrs. Billie Davis.

Current members of the Idea Seekers, Mrs. Marian Wagster, and of the Circle of Hope, Mrs. Colene Rivera, read those circle letters.  Each circle letter included a synopsis of the activities and missions of the group in 1990 along with a photo of the members.

An evening of fellowship,
food, laughter, and memories was completed with a group photo which will be placed
in our next memory box.

UMM Fall Retreats Just Around the Corner!

Registration is open for "Waking to God's Dream," a Florida United Methodist Men's retreat planned for Oct. 9-10, and Russ Graves, Florida Conference lay leader, is promising it will be an experience well-worth participants' time.

"Retired Bishop Dick Wills and Rev. Dr. E. Dale Locke will take us on a journey that speaks to us of God's plan for you and me. The journey is not one we are to take alone, but one where we have a band of brothers, friends and mentors to share our struggles, help with the heavy lifting and help deal with the obstacles and temptations in life."

Worship will be led by Community of Hope creative arts worship team

A second Florida UMM retreat, "Partnering with God," is planned for Oct. 23-25 at the Life Enrichment Center.

Featuring Rev Max Wilkins, President of The Mission Society, along with Rev. Ed Diaz, Leader of 71:17 Ministry, this retreat is focusing on the next generation.
