For where two or three are gathered
in my name, I am there among them.
Matthew 18:20
Why do we hear and talk
about money in the church?  There are three major reasons.

  • Jesus says in Luke 16:11, "So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?"  Money is mentioned over 800 times in the Bible!  Good stewardship is a component of spiritual development, so you will typically hear a stewardship message at least once a quarter.  For more information, check out the Financial Peace website.
  • The bulletin reports how are tithes and offerings compare to the operating budget with the goal of being transparent.  We all go the "first mile" together by contributing an increasing portion of our income to our operating budget as we all work toward 10% or a tithe of our income. (Or beyond for some!) There is a natural ebb and flow to these numbers -- giving tends to be a bit lower in January -- then it catches up over the spring -- slows down a bit in the summer -- and picks up again in late fall.  This report helps us know where we stand; our church has a long track record of faithful giving!
  •  Each of us has particular ministries that capture our hearts! Second Mile Giving allows people the opportunity to give to ministries (such as the food pantry, new technology, the Memorial Garden and our paid-for organ) "over and above" their first mile, for the ministries to which they feel particularly called.
We are blessed with a large, beautiful church campus and no debt.  Our church and Sunday School attendance are both growing steadily.  Paul writes:  "So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God."  Colossians 1:10.  Let us all pray that our church will continue to be fruitful for the next 120 years!

This Sunday, August 30, an orientation session for "Disciple II: Into the Word Into
the World" will be held in the right front classroom of the Education Building at 10:15 am.  The first formal discussion session will
be held on September 6.  Disciple II will specifically cover Genesis, Exodus, Luke,
and Acts in 32 weekly sessions.  The class
will be facilitated by Paul Harmon.
For more than twenty years, Disciple has provided the heartbeat for spiritual growth and transformation in thousands of churches through in-depth Bible study.
Its methodology-daily Bible reading, weekly meetings, viewing and discussing a DVD presentation, reflecting upon and discussing insights gained from daily Bible readings, and praying together-has strengthened people in their faith in Jesus Christ as well
as in their commitment to love and serve God and neighbor.  Disciple has proven overwhelmingly successful in nurturing Christian leadership and in developing committed disciples of Jesus Christ.

The class will be limited to 12 participants.
Study materials will be provided during the orientation session.

If you have any questions, email Paul Harmon at  [email protected].
