The California Regional Environmental Education Community (CREEC) Network is transitioning to a new website with the help of an education partner agency, and we ask for patience while we make this transition. Even though the website is down, we still have a great CREEC Network of people to work with you in each Region of California. Contact me (Teresa Lees) directly for any assistance you need for Environmental Education for the next month or so. Have a great start of the school year by including environmental education into your scope & sequence by using the EEI Curriculum....

The California Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) Curriculum is designed to teach academic standards through an engaging environmental lens. It also serves as a spring-board to extend learning beyond the classroom. After learning from the EEI Curriculum, students are better prepared to take the next step and engage in activities that will help connect them more directly with the world around them.
Many agencies, institutions, and organizations throughout California have identified themselves as providing programs and materials that can be used with the EEI Curriculum. Come learn how to teach kids about food and nutrition. Share how your farm-to-school program is transforming teaching people about their food, working with local farms, or creating delicious nutritious menus.Visit garden, food service and farm education programs; attend break-out sessions and meals that engage participants in farm-to-school best practices. Registration for the next round of professional learning events designed to help teachers and administrators implement the California Next Generation Science Standards is open. Session offerings for Rollout #3 includes on at the Ventura County Office of Education on December 12 & 13. Registration is now available online.
And don't forget the California Science Teacher's Association conference October 21 - 23 in Palm Springs.
This is an exciting year for science education in California! Implementation of the California NGSS has begun, the California Science Curriculum Framework will be released for a second public review and will be adopted before the end of the year, components of the state's new accountability system will be on-line, and we will have a better idea of what to expect for science statewide assessment. http://www.classroomscience.org/conference |

CA History-Social Science Framework includes the EP&Cs (Environmental Principles and Concepts)
Last month the State Board of Education approved a revised History-Social Science Framework for California Public Schools, and for the first time in state history, the Framework includes five key Environmental Principles and Concepts.
These environmental principles examine the interactions and interdependence of human societies and natural systems and are presented in Appendix F of the Framework.
The EP&Cs are also part of the CA Science Framework in Appendix 2 and are what forms the basis for the EEI curriculum. The EP&Cs are to be included in upcoming science state adopted instructional materials as well.
Principle I - People Depend on Natural Systems
The continuation and health of individual human lives and of human communities and societies depend on the health of the natural systems that provide essential goods and ecosystem services.
Principle II - People Influence Natural Systems
The long-term functioning and health of terrestrial, freshwater, coastal, and marine ecosystems are influenced by their relationships with human societies. Principle III - Natural Systems Change in Ways that People Benefit from and can Influence. Natural systems proceed through cycles that humans depend upon, benefit from, and can alter. Principle IV - There are no Permanent or Impermeable Boundaries that Prevent Matter from Flowing Between Systems. The exchange of matter between natural systems and human societies affects the long-term functioning of both. Principle V - Decisions Affecting Resources and Natural Systems are Complex and Involve Many Factors. Decisions affecting resources and natural systems are based on a wide range of considerations and decision-making processes.
