Planning for Environmental Literacy at the District Level and Beyond
Congratulations to local district, Petaluma City Schools, for leading the way toward Environmental Literacy in our region! Petaluma City Schools applied for support through the ChangeScale School Partnership Initiative. Through this initiative, ChangeScale works with regional environmental education providers and selected school districts to create an environmental literacy leadership team that can:
- Assess current Environmental Literacy efforts;
- Determine feasible district-wide goals for Environmental Literacy and strategies for reaching those goals; and
- Establish a district-wide Environmental Literacy Plan, including identifying necessary funding, an implementation plan, and other required support.

The Sonoma EE Collaborative Professional Development Committee invites you to learn about the Blueprint for Environmental Literacy with Blueprint Task Force member, Terry Metzger, and CREEC Co-coordinator, Laura Powell: June 16, 10am-noon at Laguna de Santa Rosa.
Environmental Literacy has never been more important as Californians take on and are affected by climate change, drought, overfishing, ocean acidification, nature deficit disorder, and the over-dependence on screen time for our young people. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson released the Blueprint for Environmental Literacy in September to guide strategies and initiatives to realize the ambitious goal of achieving environmental literacy for all California students. This is a document that educators, administrators, parents, environmental education advocates, and anyone interested in making sure today's youth get to experience our natural resources should be familiar with. May is Living Schoolyard Month in California and International School Grounds Month around the world! Green Schoolyards America is pleased to announce the release of a free set of Activity Guides, produced in honor of these events. Together the Activity Guide set includes a total of 147 schoolyard activities, written by 123 organizations from the United States and around the world.

The Leadership Institute for Ecology and The Economy and Santa Rosa Junior College are recruiting for the first 2016 summer class of Resilience Rising: Leadership Academy for Sustainable Community. Students will gain leadership and sustainability skills and experience through workshops and hands-on field experiences from experts in local sustainability efforts, and will leave Resilience Rising prepared to tackle leadership and sustainability challenges in their communities.
