Outdoor programs play supporting role for state's new science standards

| | Outdoor Schools and new Science Standards are a perfect fit. |
While many districts are just beginning to make the shift to the new science standards, directors of California's network of outdoor programs say their week-long outdoor science camps can help districts and their students in the interim because the outdoor science curriculum, with its focus on asking questions based on observation, carrying out investigations and analyzing data, hands-on learning and group interaction, is well-aligned with the new standards, which are being rolled out across the state this year. U.S. Department of Education announced the Green Ribbon Schools on Earth Day
The aim of U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) is to inspire schools, districts and Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) to strive for 21st century excellence, by highlighting promising sustainability practices and resources that all schools can employ. This leads to sustainability education that helps all students engage in hands-on learning, hone critical thinking and collaboration skills, learn many disciplines, and develop a solid foundation in STEM subjects.
The top scoring schools that apply for Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) in California move on to be recognized by the US Department of Education. Here is a list of schools who awarded the Green Ribbon in each state: US Department of Ed Green Ribbon Schools. The California Department of Education then awards schools at the state level. All complete ED-GRS applications of public schools and school districts will be automatically considered for the California Department of Education's state award.
Local California Green Ribbon Schools recognized through the Central Coast Green Building Council (CCGBC)
The local chapter of the USGBC, now called the Central Coast Green Building Council, is setting their sites on assisting schools in the Tri Counties to apply for the Green Ribbon School award. Through the partnership with the CREEC Network, Cuesta College's Sustainability Resource Center, and CCGBC, Monterey Road Elementary School in San Luis Obispo County applied and received a silver award for a CA Green Ribbon School. Several other schools in Region 8 also were awarded the CA Green Ribbon School distinction. We fully expect more schools in Region 8 to become CA Green Ribbon Schools and to also be recognized nationally.
