Audubon California Starr Ranch Sanctuary
Barn Owl Cam
Starr Ranch Sanctuary is in Trabuco Canyon and is bordered by the Cleveland National Forest on the north and east, the Ronald W. Caspers Regional Park on the south, and the developments of Dove Canyon and Coto de Caza on the west.
The Starr Ranch Sanctuary Barn Owl Cam, along with other Ranch cameras, are live. Barn Owl owlets recently hatched and you and your students can watch them in their eucalyptus tree cavity. Enjoy and learn by watching the Starr Ranch Cam! Visit the Starr Ranch Sanctuary website to learn more about public and school programs.

A waste-reduction partnership between the Orange County Department of Education's Inside the Outdoors program and OC Waste & Recycling has received the state's highest environmental honor. Project Zero Waste, a service-learning program that empowers students with hands-on environmental science instruction, has earned its collaborators the prestigious Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award, or GEELA . . .

The students worked over the course of several months before submitting their concept to the Lexus Eco Challenge, a nationwide contest that encourages students to help their community solve an environmental problem. Their plan calls for drip irrigation, low-flush toilets and drought-tolerant landscaping in an effort to reduce water use at their school by at least 30 percent . . .

Eligibility: Elementary Schools in the Orange County area
Green Up Our Schools is a three year, hands-on program with personalized support via monthly phone calls, constant email availability, and two school visits per year. Our program gives schools $2,000 over three years to reduce waste by encouraging a student Green Team to take responsibility of waste reduction projects with the help of a lead teacher, administrative staff member, and/or PTA member. Above all, Green Up Our Schools provides teachers and parents with the accountability and close support needed to make positive change on the local and district level in terms of waste reduction . . .

EE Providers: Save the Date! June 24, 2016
Processes and Tools for Transitioning to NGSS
Free Workshop
Environmental and Science Education Providers who already have an introductory understanding of NGSS who are based in Orange County and surrounding counties are invited to attend this free one-day workshop. It will be held at the Orange County Department of Education in Costa Mesa on June 24, 2016. We will present multiple approaches and resources to help your organization to begin planning a transition to supporting the Next Generation Science Standards. We will facilitate modeling three-dimensional student-centered experiences piloted by practitioners in the field. Our focus will be on processes to build program capacity and begin planning implementation of NGSS in a collaborative atmosphere. You will walk away with tools and resources that you can choose from that best meet the needs of your site and staff..
