Green Ribbon Schools Award Winners

State Superintendent Torlakson celebrates students' environmental efforts.
|
At a ceremony on Friday, February 26, 2016 State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced the national nominees for Green Ribbon Schools.
The nominees are:
- Los Angeles Unified School District, Los Angeles County
- Manhattan Beach Unified School District, Los Angeles County
- San Francisco Unified School District, San Francisco County
- Bay Farm School, Alameda, Alameda County
- Bishop O'Dowd High School (private), Oakland, Alameda County
In addition, California Green Ribbon School Additional Awardees were recognized for their efforts. In Region 8 those include:
Public Schools:
- Monterey Road Elementary School, San Luis Obispo County (Silver)
- Santa Barbara Senior High School, Santa Barbara County (Silver)
- Will Rogers Elementary School, Ventura County (Silver)
Districts:
- Montecito Union Elementary, Santa Barbara County (Gold)
- Hope Elementary, Santa Barbara County (Silver)
Private Schools:
- The Thacher School, Ventura County (Gold)
Also on the horizon is a training this spring for schools who want to learn how to become a Green Ribbon School for the next school year. Will keep you posted on that training.

The Coastal Discovery Center in San Simeon Cove is seeking docents who love to share their passion for the central coast with visitors worldwide! As ambassador to both CA State Parks and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, docents host over 20,000 visitors annually at the center, the pier and the beach, teach school children, work at special events, maintain a native garden, build exhibits and/or participate in citizen science programs. Training dates for 2016 are April 2, 9 and 16th. For more information... - Attend an information session at Rabobank in Cambria, March 25th, 6:30pm,

Environmental Grants
EPA Grants for Locally-Focused Environmental Education Projects
EPA now accepting applications for locally-focused EE projects
The application period for the 2016 Environmental Education Grants Program is now open. Approximately $2.7 million of funding is available to support locally-focused EE projects that design, demonstrate, and/or disseminate EE practices, methods, or techniques.
Through the EE Local Grants Request for Proposals (also known as a solicitation notice), EPA is looking to support locally-focused EE projects that increase public awareness and knowledge about environmental issues. Projects should promote environmental stewardship and help develop informed, knowledgeable and responsible citizens in the community(-ies) in which the project is located. From this RFP, EPA expects to award up to three grants from each of the EPA's 10 Regional Offices, for a total of approximately 30 grants nationwide. The award amount for each of these grants will be approximately, but no more than, $91,000. Since 1992, EPA has distributed between $2 and $3.5 million in grant funding per year through the EE Grants Program, supporting more than 3,600 grants.
