Environmental Education in 2016
In 2016 we will see an increase in attention to Environmental Education. Hope you will be involved in these noteworthy items. We are all in this together!
1. A Big Win for US Environmental Education in ESSA
On Dec. 9, US Congress passed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). ESSA includes language making environmental education eligible for federal grants. NAAEE worked with congressional champions of the No Child Left Inside Act (NCLI) to secure this crucial language in the bill. President Obama is expected to sign the bill into law soon. 2. Blueprint for Environmental Literacy (BEL) now has a Steering Committee
One of the recommendations in the Blueprint for Environmental Literacy (BEL) is to create a standing Environmental Literacy Steering Committee (ELSC) for Implementation and Continuous Improvement to make recommendations to the California State Legislature, State Board of Education, and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction (SSPI) for the implementation of all Blueprint recommendations, and to engage key stakeholders to review progress.The SSPI, Tom Torlakson, has assembled members of the environmental education community to serve on the Steering Committee. 3. Google+ Community for Environmental Education for Region 8 We have just created a online community for teachers and environmental educators to join through SLOCOE Connections. Please share any lessons, ideas, highlights, questions or events that can help ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATORS collaborate throughout our local area. Also add some info about yourself and school on the introduction page to help grow this network for teachers beyond the classroom! Join the Google+ community here:

The Kern County Water Agency's Improvement District No. 4 and Bakersfield City School District invite you to kick-off the New Year with a FREE Project WET workshops, featuring classroom-proven, hands-on learning activities that make water topics come alive for students. Our workshop models activities that are practical for teachers, yet also engages student interdisciplinary critical thinking skills that are at the core of CCSS and NGSS....

Santa Barbara Zoo will be hosting a 2-day NGSS and the Environment Training February 4th and 5th. One of the greatest opportunities EE Providers have in 2016 is the chance to support/resource teachers with NGSS aligned lessons and activities that can be done at our outdoor sites or in their classrooms. . . .

education into your classroom? Then come to the First Annual STEM Symposium. Learn how to start or enhance your STEM classroom and program and find ways to promote STEM education at your school.Participants will have workshop opportunities with STEM educators and administrators who will share resources, programs and lessons. . . . .

S cience teachers' conference, NGSS: Engineering Our Future, to take place on Saturday, February 27th, 2016 at Oxnard College in Oxnard, California. We need participants, presenters and exhibitors to make our conference a success. The Gold Coast Science Network is the local chapter of the California Science Teachers' Association, serving Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties and the surrounding area.
