Here's to a Collaborative School Year!
Welcome to the 2015 - 2016 school year! May this be the best, most collaborative school year ever! May we collaborate on cleaning up the environment, on greening our schools, and on teaching environmental stewardship by showing students how to care for the earth. May you find ways to collaborate with other environmental groups and agencies. May you find ways to collaborate with schools and your local community. What you do is vital. We are all partners in this common goal of caring for our local environment and for a better future for our children. Caring for both is what is needed at this time.
Coastal Clean Up is on September 19th, Green Apple Day of Service is on Sept. 26th and the Growing Edible Education Symposium for our Tri Counties is on October 9th and 10th in Santa Barbara. On October 29 & 30 is the CA STEM Symposium in Anaheim and also the Green School Summit in Pasadena.

One way to collaborate with one another is to come together to hear about who is doing what kind of environmental education. Please come to share and to learn about local programs in SLO County. These gatherings will also take place in Santa Barbara County, Ventura County and Kern County this school year. . .

The Green School movement is growing in Region 8 and we would like to see more Green Ribbon Schools in our area. This is a collaboration with Central Coast Green Build Council Please come to either one of the these trainings to hear from Lesley Taylor of CA Department of Education explain how to become a Green Ribbon School (NOTE: This is just a sample flyer from Orange County) . . .

Another collaboration is taking place between all the garden education and farm to school programs in Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties. This is first annual symposium and will be rotated each year. This two day symposium is hosted at Trinity Gardens in SB. . . .

Surge of Interest in EEI Curriculum Units
Back to School Surge for Environmental Education Curriculum
Materials in demand as drought, wildfires dominate California headlines
SACRAMENTO-CalRecycle's Office of Education and the Environment is on pace to shatter records in August as back-to-school orders surge for California's Education and the Environment Initiative curriculum. CalRecycle received nearly 600 orders for the environment-based units during the week of August 9-15. If the trend continues, August will surpass June's all-time high of 1,000 orders in a single month. In-demand units include Earth's Water, The Geography of Where We Live, and California Indian Peoples and Management of Natural Resources.
"More teachers and students are seeing firsthand how California's groundbreaking EEI curriculum is tailor-made to address the unique environmental issues we face as a state," program chief Bryan Ehlers said. "Amid California's extreme drought and wildfires, EEI provides teachers with highly topical lessons that keep students engaged in the classroom and prepare them to become 21st century problem-solvers."
The CREEC Network collaborates with CalRecycle's Office of Education & the Environment on delivering EEI Teacher Trainings. Please contact Teresa Lees to set up an EEI training at your school here in Region 8.
This school year marks five years since the EEI curriculum was approved by the California State Board of Education and cleared for distribution to California classrooms. The free, state-sponsored, K-12 curriculum is the only one in the country to teach science and history/social science standards through an environmental lens.
