DWR & Project WET Science Team to Host
Understanding Climate Change in California Workshop
DWR's Climate Change Science Team is convening four workshops on climate change and water, through the Project WET Program. Project WET is the Water Education Foundations (WEF) award winning international Program that integrates hands on teaching concepts dealing with water education. The interdisciplinary Project WET activities are correlated to Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards and are an effective tool for integrating student knowledge of water resources, with activities that include real life based scenarios that provide strong foundations for STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) and Service-Learning programs. Project WET activities are designed to supplement existing curriculum, including the use of EEI (Education & the Environment Initiative) curriculum units.
Last year two pilot workshops were conducted in Oroville and Visalia, through support from DWR and WEF. The success of the workshops indicated high interest on the subject to encourage the DWR Climate Change Team to continue forward with more workshops. For 2015, DWR has coordinated with WEF on workshops in Los Angeles, Bishop and is looking forward to workshops Fresno and Redding this September. The first workshop was held on April 25 at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles in coordination with Heal the Bay and USC-Sea Grant and was well-received by teachers and local educators who work in Los Angeles, as well as those working in schools in San Diego, Santa Clarita, Palmdale, Chino and Avalon (Santa Catalina Island). The last workshop was held June 15, in Bishop at the Paiute Shoshone Cultural Center in the Eastern Sierra Nevada region with project partners from the Bishop Paiute Tribe and the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection.
After the summer break, Fresno will play host to one of the last workshops. This will include partners from the Fresno County Office of Education and the CREEC Network. It will be held at Scout Island's Education Center, on September 19, 2015. As Californians have lived through one of the driest years on record, we encourage all those in CREEC's Region 7 to come and hear from DWR's Climate Change Scientist about our current water situation.
