Welcome to the New Year and Welcome our new CREEC Statewide Director: Shannon Gordon

We'd like to introduce you to Shannon Gordon, our statewide CREEC Director! Shannon began working for the California Department of Education in October 2013. Since that time she has been highly instrumental in the development, adoption, and rollout of the California Next Generation Science Standards. Her passion for, and background in, Environmental Education prompted her to apply for CDE’s Program Consultant position for Environmental Education. She has worked as an educator and program coordinator for a variety of Environmental Education Centers as well as taught three years of formal middle school science. Shannon received her Master of Arts studying environmental education organizations and their relationship with the formal education system. Her expertise will surely benefit the CREEC Network and EE throughout California. Welcome Shannon!

Talking about new things such as the Next Generation Science Standards, we are forming learning communities where we learn together what NGSS will look like for environmental education. Our first meeting in 2015 will be in San Luis Obispo on January 28 at 4pm in the SLOCOE Training Room. We will look at possible templates to use to align to NGSS and look at any sample programs you are working on. Please RSVP soon!

Spotlight on Learning Among the Oaks in Santa Margarita

Environmental Education in Action spotlights the amazing Learning Among the Oaks program of the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo: We are an outdoor science education program based at Santa Margarita Elementary School, a K-6th grade school within the Atascadero Unified School District. A nature trail developed on 15 acres of private Santa Margarita Ranch land adjacent to the school provides a place where children and families can explore the oak woodland ecosystem and learn about ranch conservation practices.
